PACKING AND MULCHING IMPLEMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 16, 1915.
Application filed December 8, 1913. Serial No. 805,448.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LAURITS T. RAsMUs- SEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Council Bluffs, in the county of Pottawattamie and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Packing and Mulching Implements, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a combined packing and mulching implement and has for one of its objects to provide such a construction that the mulching disk will operate as a scraper or cleaner for the packing disk.
Another object is to provide a mounting for the mulching disk which will operate to normally dispose its longitudinal axis rearwardly of the longitudinal axis of the packing disk so that the teeth of the mulching disk may enter the ground after the crest between the packing disks has been formed.
Still another object is to provide such a hearing or mounting for the mulching disk that both of these disks may be conveniently constructed, and of such form that they will sustain the stresses incident to their use without breakage or injury.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as described herein and claimed, and as illustrated in the drawing, wherein,
Figure 1 is a plan view of a combined packing and mulching implement embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a partly broken view to illustrate the mounting of the mulching disks in the packing disks, and showing the relative position of parts. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the irregular line 3-3 of Fig. 2, a shaft or axle being added.
Referring now to the drawing for a more particular description, numeral 4 indicates a shaft or axle, of any suitable length, having bearings at its ends in the elongated frame 5.
At 6 are indicated primary or packing disks mounted on the shaft so that they may rotate thereon, their hubs, spokes and rims being respectively indicated at a, b and 0, the rims being outwardly convergent or of substantially A-shape in cross-section. The inner surface of rims 0 provide circular bearing faces d preferably of uniform diameter as compared with each other, and
preferably each bearing-face cl is disposed garl'allel with the longitudinal axis of the At 7 are indicated secondary or mulching disks, each being carried by a packing disk and disposed between two adjacent packing disks. Each disk 7 consists of a sleeve 6 of less diameter than disks 6, said sleeve having a contact-face on its outer side and provided with an outwardly-projecting rim 9 with peripheral teeth It.
The frame may be provided with a suitable platform 8, the tongue and drivers seat being respectively indicated at 9 and 10, and it will be seen that the entire weight of the implement will be supported by the packing disks. During the forward movement of the implement when drawn over a field, the weight of each mulching disk is the only force for causing its teeth to enter the ground, and these disks will normally project rearwardly of the packing disks during this movement, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the longitudinal axes of said disks not being in alinement.
During the forward movement of the implement, the disks will rotate independently of each other and the rearmost part of the sleeve of each mulching disk will bear upon the rearmost part of the inner face 03 of the rim 0 of each packing disk. It will be understood that the ground will be packed by operation of disks 6, longitudinal crests or ridges being formed between their rims, and the teeth of the mulching disks will form pockets or perforations in these crests, this being one of the desired results in operation;
By referring to Figs. 1 and 2 it will be seen that disks 7 will operate as self-cleaners since the rearward part of these disks project rearwardly of disks 6, and the forward part of disks 6 may engage the sides of the teeth upon the forward part of disks 7, and this is a desired operation for causing adhesions to be removed from these parts.
The implement as described consists of few and simple parts, and the disks may be conveniently constructed, the inner faces cl of the packing disks and the outer faces f of sleeves e of the mulching disks preferably having smooth surfaces so that the mulching disks may move freely while supbenefitsto -be -derived thereby-are, that disks 6 cause the-plowed ground to" be -'suffici'ent1y== packed to close 'all openings or-1air spaces and th ereby to 1 prevent 1 or retard evaporation; "and disks: 7 operate to break the smooth surface formed by the packing disks and form epockets 1 in-flth'e crests, 1 tending to prevent the escape of moisture fromicapil lary attraction?
