SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 263,961, dated September 5, 1882. Application filed J unc 27, 1882. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWARD M. RICH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bristol, in the county of Bucks, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Toys, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the toy embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a top or plan view thereof.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.

My invention consists of a toy having a shaft which is rotated in opposite directions by the action of a cord and the momentum ac quired by the shaft, said shaft carrying a series of loosely-depending figures which are forced outward by or fly out by centrifugal action, thus producing an amusing and interesting toy.

Referring to the drawings, A represents a shaft, which is mounted on ahandle, B, and 0 represents a string or cord, which is passed through an opening, a, in the boss or bearing portion of said handle, so that it may be wound on said shaft, whereby when the cord is drawn out it rotates said shaft, the momentum acquired by the shaft causing its rotation in the opposite direction, the cord rewinding,so'that 'lurther motionmay be imparted to the shaft,

this feature, however, being well known.

'To the upper end of the shaft are secured arms, plates, or disks D I), to which is pivoted, hung, or otherwise loosely attached a series of rods or arms, E, the lower ends of which carry figures F, which thus depend from the shaft A. To the shaft is also attached a base or platform, G, which occupies a position below the figures F, so that when the latter are at rest they are in contact with or approach said platform G. To the upper arms, E, are secured balls or ornaments F, and bothsets of figures are properly weighted, so that they properly return to their normal the toy is not in operation.

To the platform G is secured a series of figures, F, each of which is so disposed that it is preferably opposite to one of the depending figures F. It willbe seen that when the shaftpositions when A is rotated the figures F fly outwardly, owing to centrifugal action, leaving the platform G and assuming horizontal positions, or nearly so, in both motions of the shaft and returning to the platform when the shaft is at rest, thus making an amusing and interesting toy, the amusement and interest increasing from the fact that the figures F apparently leave the figures F and afterward return to the same. The upper figures, F, operate similarly to the figures F as ornamental or additional features of the toy.

The weights employed for restoring the figures F may be of the form of balls E, on which the figures are represented as sitting or standing, the position of the balls being such that when the figures lower or return the balls strike the platform G on the periphery or on the upper face thereof, so as to limit the inward motion of the figures and prevent binding of the same with the platform.

The handle is provided with a whistle, H, for evident purposes, and the shaft may have secured to it a power or balance wheel, J.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. The handle and cord, in combination with a shaft provided with loosely-depending figures, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. 7 i

2. The handle and cord,in combination with a rotary shaft provided with loosely-depending figures and platform, substantially asand for the purpose set forth.

3. The handle and cord, in combination with a rotary shaft provided with loosely-dependin g figures and a platform secured to said shaft and provided with stationary figures, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

4:. The handle and cord, inoombination with arotary shaft provided with loosely-depending figures, to which are secured weights E, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

5. The handle and cord, in combination with arotary shaft provided with loosely-dependin g figures and loosely-depending ornaments, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
