UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT R. BATCHELDER, OF NEYBURYPORT, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN TOYS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l 39.533, dated June 3, 1573; application filed March To all whom it may concern:
15e it known that I, ALBERT R. BATCHEL- DER, ot'Newburyport, in the county ot' Essex and State ot' Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Toy, ot' which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represeuts a side view ot' my toy, partly in section; and Fig. 2, a diagram, indicating the motion of the balls in opposite direction.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention is au improvement upon the toy tor which Letters Patent were granted to E. L. Morris, June 25, 1872, No. 128,239. The improvement consists mainly in suspending halls from the handle by flexible cords or strings. The object is to increase the diliicnlty ot' operating the toy, and to enable a series ot beautiful parallel curves to be described about the handle in various planes. Thus the ingenuity and patience ot' the operator are more highly taxed, and the enjoyment consequent upon success, as well as upon the production ot' new curves or movements, proportionally increased. Balls of varying sizes or colors may be likewise employed. The detachment ot' them may be readily effected.
In the drawing, A represents the handle, of Wood or other suitable material, to which is rigidly attached the wire rod B, with eye a at end thereof. A wooden piece, U, with a cylin- 22, 1era.
drical hole, is placed on wire rod B so as to turn lreely thereon. Wire hooks D, with eyes b, are placed at both ends ot' piece C, the upper eyes embracing rod B, the other having attached strings d, which carry at their ends the balls E, also of wood or other material. Tin washers e are placed at both sides ot' hooks D, to reduce friction and prevent the contact with the wooden parts. Eye a ot` rod B prevents the slipping ont ot' the washers.
To operate the toy, take thc handle in the right hand; hold the ball nearest to it in the lett hand, produce, by a motion of the hand, the revolving ofthe ball at the end ol' the wire rod toward the lci't; throw, then, the, other ball toward the right, keepingl the right hand in motion, and the balls will revolve rapidly in opposite directions, as indicated by the arrows in Figs. l and 2.
Having thusdescribed my invention, Iclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Pat ent- The toy formed of the balls E E, flexible cords or strings d d, wire hooks l), revolving piece U, rod a, and handle A, all constructed and arranged as and for the purposes speci lied.
ALBERT RUSSELL BATCHELDER.
