IMPROVEMENT IN CROSS-BOW TOYS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 151,0l5, dated May 19, 187i; application filed April 7, 1874.

To all whom it may concern:

Beit known that I, SAMUEL T. FIELD, of the city and countyot' Worcester and State ot Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Toy Arrow-Gun; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description ofthe same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form apart of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 represents a front view of my improved toy arrow-gun, and Fig. 2 represents a plan view ofthe same.

The object of this invention is to provide a toy-gun for throwing arrows, which shall be cheap, efi'ective, and convenient; and to that end my invention consists in an improved arrow-gun, constructed as herein shown and described. v

In the drawings, A denotes the handle, which is turned from wood, and has a hole, a, formed in its upper part or head A. B indicates a cross-piece, also ot' wood, notched at its upper edge b, and secured to the side of the handle-head A by a screw, pin, or rivet, c, so that the notch b and hole a will correspond in position, as indicated. An elastic cord, D, ot' rubber is arranged across the central part of the opening a., along the crosspiece B, the ends ot' said elastic cord D being held in saw-notches, d, cut in the ends ot' bar B, as shown.

The arrow E is passed through the opening a with its notched end against the cord D. The gun is held by the handle A, and the arrow drawn back with the thumb and ngcr,

so as to stretch the cord D, as shown in dotted lines, Fig. 2, and when released the arrow is propelled forward by the contraction of the elastic cord D. The arrow is guided by the opening a, so as to move in a comparatively accurate course. Should the cord D be rcleased from the barB, or a new cord be required,

Vthe ends ot' said cord can be readily secured in the bar by simply stretching a short portion at the end of the cord until its size or diameter is sufciently reduced to allow it to pass into the saw-cut d.; then, when it is permitted to contract, it will be irmly held in position. The bar B can be swung around so as to lie parallel `with the handle A, when the toy can be conveniently carried in the pocket.

I am aware that elastic cord has been used in many ways for propelling arrows and other missiles, and I am also aware that a metal bow, with rubber cord, was patented to E. W. Judd, March 2, 1869, and I do not malte claim to such devices; but

What Ido claim as new, and of my invention, and desire to secure by-Letters Patent, as an improved article of manufacture, is-

The improved toy arrow-gun, consisting of the handle-piece A A, pivoted cross-piece B, and elastic cord D, said parts being constructed an d combined for operation, as herein shown and described.
