J. R. GLUXTON. TOP SPINNING TOY No. 561,492. PateIIt/ed June 2, 1896.
IlNiTnn .STATES PATENT' Orricn JAMES R. OLUXTON, OF LONDON, OI-IIO, ASSIGNOR OF ONEHALF TO XVAIJTER O. CLARK, OF PEVAUKEE, IVISOONSIN.
TOP-SPINNING TOY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 561,492, dated June 2, 1896.
Application filed November 29, 1895. Serial No. 570,458. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom t may concern,.-
Be it known that I, J AMES R. CLUXTON, of London, in the county of Madison and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Top-Spinning Toy Pistols; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, ref erence being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked I o tliereomwhich form a part of this specification.
This invention is an improvement in combined toy pistols and top-spinning devices; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described,
claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a side View of the toy. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section through the same, showin g the parts cocked ready to be 2o discharged. Fig. Sis a similarsectional view of the parts after firing Fig. fl is a horizontal detail section on line 4 4, Fig. 2.
A designates a case which is composed of two longitudinal halves united in any desired manner and shaped so as to appear like an ordinary pocket-revolver. Vithin the barrel portion of the case is a fiat spring B, which is fastened to one side thereof at its rear end, while its front end presses closely 3o against a bar O, which is adapted to be moved longitudinallybeside spring The rear end of: bar O is connected by a link D to the hammer E, which is pivoted in the handle portion of the case, and projects through a suit- 3 5 able slot a in the upper side of the case, so
that it can be cocked like an ordinary pistolhammer. The hammer has a head c, which is adapted to strike a cap placed in the ordinary paper-cap holder a' on the case when the 4o device is red The pivoted end of the hammer has a notch e in its side, which, when the hammer is cocked. is engaged by a dog f on the upper end of the trigger-piece F, which is pivoted in the handle of the case, the trigger end depending thro ugh a slot in the case, as shown.
A spring G is coiled on a transverse lug CL2 in the handle in front of the hammer, and one projecting end g of the spring is engaged 5o with a notch d in the side of link D, so as to normally force said link forward, thereby pulling the hammer down and projecting bar G forward. The other end of spring G may be arranged to bear on the dog f, so as to cause it to engage notch e, but as spring G should be quite stiff it may be found preferable to use a weaker spring g' to press the dog f against the hammer.
In the under side of the barrel in line with the inner edge of bar O is a slot A', vwhich ex- 6o tends inward beyond the front end of spring B, as shown. In the under edge of bar O is a notch c, which, when the bar is in its forward position, is brought to the rear end of slot A', as shown. 65
II designates a top having a short spindle h in line with the gravital axis of its body, which may be of any desired construction.
In using the toy the spindle 7i of the top is inserted between bar O and spring B by in- 7o v the spindle of the top back to the rear end of slot A. Upon pulling the trigger the ham mer is released and spring E drives bar O for- 7 5 Ward quickly. As bar O moves forward it rolls the spindle 7L of the top along the end of spring B, thereby rotating the top very rapidly, and as soon as the spindle rolls olf the end of spring B the top drops down and for- 8o wardly and spins merrily away, to the great amusement of the youngsters. Another top may be then placed in position, the hammer cocked, and the top iired to spin like the other. One pistol and several tops form a satisfac- 8 5 tory outt.
Having thus described my invention, what I therefore claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent thereon, is-
l. In a toy, the combination of a pivoted 9o hammer, a trigger, a sliding bar, a link connecting said bar to the hammer, a spring for projecting said bar when the hammer is released, and a flat spring beside said sliding bar; with a top having a shank adapted to be inserted between the bar and fiat spring, substantially as described.
2. In a combined toy pistol and top-spinning device, the combination of a case shaped like a revolver, and having a longitudinal slot in roo its barrel 5 a hammer and a trigger in the handle part of the case, a fiat spring and sliding bar in the barrel of the case, a link pivotally connected to the hammer and said bar, and a spring engaging said link, adapted to be tensioned when the hammer is cocked, and to snap the hammer and project the bar substantially as described; with a top having a shank adapted to be inserted between the bar and iat spring, whereby it is caused to spin and released when the pistol is fired, all substantially as and for the purpose described.
3. The herein-described toy pistol, and topspinner, eonsistin g of the two-part ease shaped like a pocket-revolver and having a slot in the under side of its barrel; a hammer pivoted in the handle part, a combined dog and trigger JAMES R. CLUXTON.
