Beit known that I, EDWARD BEACH, of Ilion, in the county of Herkimer and State of New York,have invented certain new and useful Improvcments in Ejector Mechanisms for Firearms; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the4 invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use ro the same, reference being had to the accompan ying drawings, and to the figures of refer ence marked thereon, which form part of this specilication.
'lhe object of my present invention is to provide an improved ejector mechanism for lirearms which simply and effectively4 accomplishes its object and in a new and novel manner.
ln the drawings, Figure 1 shows'the work- :o ing parts of a lirearm embodying the features of my invention, mostly in vertical section, with the parts in the closed position. Fig. 2 shows substantially the same parts as Fig` 1 in a partially-open position. Fig. 3

Referring to the reference letters and tignres in'a more particular description, l indi- 3o ea tes the, frame, which includes, among other things, the standing breech 2 and the fon wardl\'e.\:ending` portion 1", carrying in the l'orward end the joint-pin 3. 'Ihe barrel l1 is provided, as usual, with a barrel-lug 5 on the 3,5 under side, which is received in a recess in the forward portion 1 of the frame and engages on the. joint-pin 3. For securing the barrel in closed position with reference to the frame there is provided a catch 5, engaging with a .1.o shouh ler on the barrel-lug and operated by the usual top lever 6. In the barrel-lug there is provided a longitudinal opening parallel with the barrel which receives the ejector-slide 7, carrying the, cjector-head 8, which head `is adapted to engage with the rim of the shell in the barrel. The ejector is retained in position in the arm by the transverse pin 9 passing through the barrel-lng and engaging in a recess 1n the under side of the stem or slide 7,
shows which recess is elongated to permit the movement of the ejector. In `the opening which receives the ejector-slide 7 there is also mounted to slide freely to and fro the ejector-striker 10. Farther back in the opening which receives the striker 10 is the spring 11 for op- 55 erating the striker. The striker 10 is provided with a shoulder adapted to be engaged by the shoulder of the catch 12. The catch 12 is jointed at 13 to the frame at a point substantially in a vertical line below the joint-pin 3. A spring 111, supported on a pin in the barrel-lug, serves to force the fric :nd of the catch 12 upward into engagement with the shoulder of the striker when it is not otherwise forced down.

a shoulder adapted to engage with a shoulder l on an arm of the catch 12, and also .an arm adapted to engage onV the upper side ofthe said arm of the catch 12 and trip the same.
The operation of the mechanism is substan` tially as follows: Starting with the parts in the position in which they are shown in Fig.
1, after withdrawing the catch 5 by means of the top lever 6 the arm can bebroken down or turned on the joint-pin 3 in the usual manner. During the first part of the opera- 8O tion and by reason of the peculiar arrangement of the joint 13 of the catch 12 and the pivot-pin 3 the catch-lug 12 is moved forward with reference to the barrel-lug. In so doing the shoulder on the end of the catch 12 en- 85 gages with the shoulder on the starting and tripping' lever, causing the tripping-lever to turn on its pivot-to some extent. In so doing the armlwhich is in engagement with the ejector-slide forces the ejector and starts the 9o cartridge-shell. As the movement is continued the tripping-arm of the lever 16 engages-on the top of the arm of the catch 12 and forces it downwardly until such time as the catch-shoulder becomes disengaged from the shoulder on the striker 10. dien the striker is thus released, it is instantly propelled toward the rear, striking the ejector anzi instantly expelling. the shell. During the iirst part of the opening operation the striker is drawn back to some extent, following the movement of the catch 12; but this only increases the amount of the stroke after it is released. In closing. the arm the ejector is cammed back into its closed position by engaging with and sliding, down the standing breech 2. It at the same time forces back the strikeil() until such time as it is caught by the catch 12 and held. In the end or' the arm of the catch 12 there is provided an adjusting-screw '17, which is engaged hy'the tripping-arm ot' the lever 16, and by adjusting this screw the ejecting operation canhe'ti'med.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with the Working'parts of a breakdown iirearrn including a barrel-lug of a sliding ejector mounted in the barrel-lug, a striker therefor,'a spring for operating the striker, a catch for holding the striker jointed to the frame adjacent to the joint-pin and a starting and tripping levelpivoted in the barrel-lug having an arm to engage the ejector, an arm and shoulder. to engage and trip the said striker-catch, substantially as set forth.
' 2. The combination in aiirearm of the frame having a standing breech and a forward extension therefrom supporting the joint-pin, a
barrel and barrel-lug hinged on the joint-pin,
an ejector mounted on a slide in the barrellug, a sliding striker with its operating-spring, a striker-catch jointed to the frame adjacent to the joint-pin and a starting and tripping lever pivoted in the barrel-lug having an arm to engage the ejector and a shoulder and arm to engage and trip the striker-catch, substantially as set forth. f
