PATENT OFFICE.
UMBRELLA.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent- No. 735,776, dated August 11, 1903.
Application filed March 26,1908. Serial No. 149,677- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that'I, GEORGE KALTENEcK-EE,
at Hamburg, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Umbrellas, of which thefollowing is a specification.
This invention relates more particularly to umbrellas which open automatically; and its objects are to provide such a device that will be simple in construction and of light Weight. In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is alongitudinal sectional view. Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view showing the rib connections. Fig. 3 is a view showing the ratchetand-pawl mechanism in released position, and Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional view showing the operatinglever.
A hollow stick a carries the ribs 1), which are pivoted at c to suitable bearings orlugs on the stick. The ribs b are provided at their inner ends with toothed sectors (1-, which engage with a circular rack e, which is guided in the stick a by a piston g and normally urged upward by a spring 71, which is fixed thereto and to the end of the stick. The stick is strengthened by a sleeve f along the section which is cut through for the sectors 011 the ribs. ratchet-bar k near the handle. This ratchetbar may be actuatedby a pawl r on a lever 0, pivoted at p to a lug (1 on the handle. A spring-dog s-is also arranged to engage the ratchet k and to be engaged or released by the pawl r. The spring-dog sis released from e'ngagement with the ratchet k by being pressed outward by the pawl 1' when the latter is raised beyond its normal throw for operating the ratchet. In order to allowa slight transverse movement, the bar is is supported between."-
position shown at 0 Fig. 3. This-releases the A rod '2' connects'the rack c with a two pins 'n on oneside anda spring m on the 40 other. side.
The operation of the device is as follows: The-umbrella being closed, the lever 0 is successively raised and then pressed down tothe position indicated at 0., Fig. 1. This causes the pawl to pull down the ratchet-bar, rod 2', and rack e, and the latter in turn causes the segments to swin'gthe ribs out and up. The
umbrella is' closed by raising the lever 0 to the dog 3 and'allows the spring h to pull the rack up, and consequently swing the ribs down.- 7
Having thus described my invention, what I clainnand desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1.. In an umbrella, the combination with a hollow stick, of a slidable rack in said stick, pivoted ribs having toothed sectors engaging said rack and means for reciprocating said rack to swing'said ribs. I 4
2-. In an umbrella, lthe combination of'ahollow stick, :ribs pivoted to said. stick having toothed segments projecting into said stick, a rack engaging said segn 1ents,'a spring secured to saidrack and the tip of said stick, a rod from said rack, a ratchet-bar adjacent tothe handle with which said rod connects, a pivoted lever having a pawl adapted-to engage said ratchet-bar, and a spring-dog engaging said ratchet and adapted to be released by said pawl.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my sig*' nature in presence of two'witnesses.
GEORGE KALTENEOKER.
