Be it known that we, DAVID HEYMAN and THoMAs RAYMOND AnDnN, citizens of the United States of America, residing at New York city, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pop-Gru`ns, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in pop guns, and the type of gun to which the invention is particularly applicable is that in vwhich the gun mouth is provided with a movable cap serving the double purpose of limiting the discharge of an object from the gun, and assisting in inserting such object in the gun mouth, in readiness for another discharge.
The invention consists in novel mechanism for actuating the cap which controls the movement of the object, such as a cork, to be discharged from the gun.
The preferred form of the invention is illustratively exemplified in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figurel is a side elevational view, partly in section, of a pop gun constructed according to our invention; and Fig. 2 is a fragmentary top plan view thereof.
Referring to the drawing by reference characters, 10 denotes the gun stock, and 11 the gun barrel, these parts being secured together and held relatively immovable by the rivets 12.
Adapted to reciprocate within the barrel 11 is a piston 13 against which one end of a coiled tension spring 14 acts, the other end of the spring abutting against a pin 15 which traverses the barrel. Extending rearwardly from the piston 13 in the barrel 11 is a rod 16, having a hooked end 16L designed to be engaged by a sear 17, pivotally supported at 18 near the rear end of the barreland adjacent to the stock. rlhe rear end of the sear 17 is normally depressed, by
a spring 19, into engagement with the upper face of a trigger 20 which is pivotally supported at 21 in the barrel extension 11a Slidably supported over the mouth of the gun is a cap 22 preferably provided with slots 23. rlhe rear edge of the cap has perforated, oppositely disposed, ears 24 into which the hooked ends of rods 25 are adapted to engage. These rods are connected near their rear ends by a pair of cross rods 26 which pass through elongated slots 27 formed in the sides of the barrel 11. The cross rods support a rectangular yoke which comprises the horizontal plate 28 and the vertical plates 29 and 30, the said vertical plates depending within the barrel 11 and into the barrel extension 11a.
. Pivoted at 31 to the barrel extension 11a is the operating lever which comprises the nose 31a, the intermediate curved portion 31b to accommodate the trigger 20, and the hand hold 31c design-ed to rest against the gun stock. 32 denotes the cork which is to be discharged from, and reinserted in, the mouth of the barrel 11.
At the rear of the barrel extension l1a are parallel depending portions 11b which are indented at 11", and the arched portion of the operating lever between the portions 31b and 31c is provided with a transverse hole (not shown) into which the indentations 11c project, when the operating lever is completely retracted. This arrangement prevents accidental movement of the operating lever.
The operation of the device is as follows z-To cock the gun, or place it in position for discharge of the cork 32, the hand hold 31 is moved away from the gun stock toward the front of the barrel. As a result of this movement, the nose 31L of the operating lever will be moved toward the rear of the barrel, engaging the plate 3() and the hooked end 16a of the rod 16. The continued rearward movement of the parts 30 and 16a results in the cap 22 being moved backwardly (by means of rods 25) until the cork 32 is inserted in the mouth of the gun barrel, and in the hooked end 16a being engaged by the sear 17. The piston 13 is thus drawn back in the barrel and the spring 16 compressed between the pin 15 and the rear face of the piston. Vhen the hook 16 and sear 17 are in engagement, which is readily determined by the operator feeling no appreciable resistance to theJ forward movement of the operating lever, the latter is moved back into initial position so that the hand hold 31C again rests against the gun stock. The backward movement of the hand hold 31c is accompanied by forward movement of the nose 31n of the operating lever, said nose en- Vgaging the plate 29 thus moving thecap 22,
through the intermediary of the rods 25, forward on the gun barrel. The several parts then occupy theJ positions indicated in the barrel against the cork 32 and discharge` the same.
Obviously the cork cannot fly away from the barrel, as the extent of its aight or discharge is limited .by the cap 22.
The discharge'of the cork from the barrel is accompanied by a noise or pop as iscommon tothis class of guns.

In a pop gun, the combination of a gun barrel provided with oppositely disposed slots, a cap mounted at the forward end of said barrel, parallel rods extending rearmeans passing through the slots in the gun barrel and connecting the ends of said rods, and an operating lever adapted to engage said means to actuate said cap.
