Patented Jan. 11,1876.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JoHN B. GLEAVELAND, or INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN BOWS AND ARROWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 171,918, dated January 11, 1876; application filed October To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN B. OLEAVELAND, of the city of Indianapolis, county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented a certain Combination Toy, which I designate a Shooting-Top, of which the following is a description and specification:
The nature and object of my invention are the construction of a toy combining a top and a bow and arrow, so that it may be used for either pur'posea-t pleasure, and so made that it can easily be carried about in the pocket.
The accompanying drawing shows the manner in which the toy is used.
Figure 1 shows the toy arranged to be used as a top. a is the body of the top, which is made without a point, as shown in Fig. 2. b is the stem or handle of the top, and passes at will through the body of the top, so that the end or tip, when drawn up against the butt of the top body, forms a close joint, and
becomes the spinning-point of the top. Fig. 2 shows the toy arranged as a bow and arrow; a then becomes the resisting body ofthe bow, to which is attached an elastic cord, 0, of any suitable material, to serve for propelling the arrow-bolt b through the piece a.
Fig. 3 illustrates the manner of using the toy as a bow. The small end of the stem or,
bolt 12 is notched to fit the elastic cord, and is first passed through the hole in the center of the top body a, and the notched end fitted to the cord 0, which is then drawn back by one hand, the top body being clutched by the charged and fly some distance.
I attach the elastic cord to the piece a by cutting a slot in each side, which is narrower than the width or thickness of the cord, and then stretching the cord 1 spring or push it into the slot while stretched, thus making it very secure; and by again stretching the cold it may be easily detached and removed. The end of the cord .may be headed or enlarged, if deemed proper, and thecord may be made round or flat where attached to the top, as deemed best.
Having described my invention, I claim- The combination of the perforated and topshaped piece a, pointed arrow-stem b, and cord 0, arranged to form both a spinning-top and a toy shooter, substantially as set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 26th day of October, 1875.
