PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN B. GLEAVELAND, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN ARROW-SPRINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 118,108, dated August 15, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN B. OLEAVELAND, of the city of Indianapolis, county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented certain Improvements in Toy Bows and Arrows, of which the following is a specification:
The nature and object of my invention are such that I construct a bow, capable of shooting a small arrow, in such a way and of such material that it can easily be folded up and carried in the pocket.
The construction and use of said bow are hereinafter fully described.
Figure No. 1 is aview of the elastic end of the bow.
Fig. No.2 is a side View of the how. a is the body, and b the elastic strap or spring by which the arrow is propelled.
Fig. No. 3 shows the body or stiff part of the bow, in which 0 is the hole through which the arrow is operated.
Fig. No. 4 represents the manner in which the bow is used. a is the body of the bow; b, the spring or elastic strap; d, the arrow; 6 and f,
the two forefingers of the left hand; and g the forefinger, and h the thumb of the right hand.
The bow is to be made of Vulcanized India rubber or other suitable material of the form represented in the drawing. The body a is to be rather stiff and rigid, while the strap 1) is to be as elastic as possible. The arrow maybe of any form convenient for the purpose.
This bow is to be used by encircling two fin- A gers of the left hand (or more if desired) with it, and inserting the arrow through the hole 0 and between the fingers until it reaches the elastic strap b.
