Description

J. H. GOODELL.
BILLIARD CUE.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 1|. I917.

JOHN H. GOODELL, 0F MARSEILLES, ILLINOIS.
I BILLIARD-CUE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed June 11, 1917. Serial No. 173,935.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN H. GooDELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marseilles, in the county of La Salle and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Billiard-Cues, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to improve upon the construction disclosed in Patent No. 1,204,152, granted to me on November 7., 1916.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of the tip end of a billiard cue embodying the features of my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal central sectional view. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken in the plane of dotted line 33 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4: is a perspective view of the several units comprised in the cue. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the tipsecuring strap. Fig. 6 illustrates a device for expanding a rivet comprised in the construction.
In the drawings, 10 denotes a one of any suitable construction provided with an end portion 11 of reduced size having at opposite sides flattened faces 12 to accommodate the tip-securing strap. A ferrule 13 is adapted to fit over the reduced end portion of the cue and preferably is exteriorly flush with the body of the cue. In the inner end of the ferrule are two diametrically-opposite notches 14 that preferably do not ex tend to the periphery or outer surface of the ferrule.
The tip 15 (which may be of any suitable material) is secured to the end of the cue by suitable means, such as, for example, a flexible'metallic strap 16 comprising a central disk 20 and two portions 21 adapted to lie in contact with the flattened faces 12 of the one body. The extreme ends of the strap portions 21 are bent to provide angular members 17 adapted to be in the notches 14. The strap 16 may be secured to the tip 15 in any suitable manner, as, for example, by means of a tubular rivet 22 extending through registering central openings in the disk 20 and a washer 23. The disk 20 lies between the tip 15 and the washer 23. Any preferred means may be employed to expand the rivet into engagement with the tip 15. Herein I have shown a substantially conical member 24 inserted into the tip 15 and serving to split and expand the tubular portion of the rivet 22 toward the member 21. It will be seen that the rivet 2a securely connects the tip 15 and the strap 16. The ferrule 13 fits the reduced end portion of the one body snugly so that the strap portions 21 are firmly held against the flattened faces 12, thereby securing the tip 15 firmly in place.
When a tip becomes broken or worn, the ferrule 13 is pulled 011 from the end of the cue, the tip 15 and the strap 16 moving as a unit therewith. The angular ends 17 of the strap are then disengaged from the notches 1 1, whereupon the tip and strap may be separated from the ferrule. The user then takes from a reserve supply a new tip provided with a strap 16, inserts said strap into the ferrule, the angular ends 17 being guided into the notches 1 1, and then places the ferrule upon the cue.
It may be desirable to provide means to compensate for such wear of the faces 12 as may result from repeated replacement of tips. For this purpose I may form the reduced end 11 of the cue with a slot 25 ex. tending therethrough between the flattened faces 12 and insert into said slot a suitable device by means of which the reduced end portion 11 may be expanded so as to move the faces '12 apart and thus compensate for wear upon said faces. Herein I have shown a screw 26 extending into the slot 25 and engaging the material of the cue. It will be seen that by turning the screw farther into the cue, the two parts into which the reduced end portion 11 is divided by the slot 25, will be spread apart.
I claim as my invention:
1. A. billiard cue having, in combination, a body, a tip, a strap, a washer, a rivet extending through the washer and the midportion of the strap and into the tip, said strap lying between the washer and the tip, a conical member in the tip to expand the rivet, and means for securing the end portions of the strap to the body.
2. A billiard one having, in combination, a body, a tip, a strap, a rivet extending through the mid-portion of the strap and into the tip, a conical member in the tip to expand the rivet, and means for securing the end portions of the strap to the body.
3. A billiard one having, in combination, a body, a tip, a strap, a washer, a rivet extending through the washer and the midportion of the strap and into the tip, said Patented Sept. is, ieir.
strap lying between the Washer and the tip,'
and means for securing the end portions of the strap to the body.
4:. A billiard one having, in combination,
5 a body, a tip, a strap portion connected to the tip and adapted to lie beside the body, a device to embrace the body and the strap portion, and means to expand the body.
5. A billiard cue having, in combination,
and a device in the slot to expand the body.
'In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set 15 my hand. 1
