Description

DANIEL F. WHITCMB, OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
BILLIABID-CUE.
s ecific-anon 'of Letters Patnt. i
Application filed mram 16', 19 14. serial No. 818,&327.
TO all whom it may concem Be it known that I, DANIEL F. WHIT- COMB, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Billiard-Cues, of which the following isa specification.
Heretofore when the tip of a billiard cue became damaged or broken ofi it was necessary to remove the damaged tip and to put a new one on the cue. This was done by gluing a new tip in' place if the old one was damaged too much for use. If only broken off the old one was reglued in place. In either case it was necessary to clamp the tip to the cue until the glue hardened thereby rendering the cue useless until the glue hardened.
It 'is the object of my invention to so can be immediately attached to the cue with little loss of time and thereby restore the cue to a perfect condition. I accomplish this object by the mechanism described herein and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the end of a billiard cue with my improved tip attached. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal central section of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail of the spring tube. Fig. 4 is a like detail in side elevation of the tip' connecter and a section of the spring tube. Fig. 5 is an enlarged fragment of the tip and the tip washer and an edge View of the tip con nector. Fig. 6 is an enlarged detail of the tip with the washer in section.
Inthe drawings 10 is the wooden body of a billiard cue of any desired Construction except that at the tip end thereof is bored a central socket 11. In this socketis mounted a metal spring tube 12, which projects slightly beyond the wooden body and in the projecting end has notches 13 in its opposite sides. In this tube is mounted an eX- pansion spring li the inner 'end of which is secured to the inner end of tube 12. I have shown it secured by portions of the tube which are clamped around the inner end of the spring. The outer end of the spring terminates in a hook 15 which when the parts are assembled for use hooks into the eye 16 of the metal shank 17 of the tip This tip Connector comprises apressed while wet to the desired shape has a recess 20 nthe top thereof in which is received the head of the Connector.
A recess 21 in the lower surface of the washer receives the projecting end of the spring tube and an aperture 2:2 in the Web between' these recesses permits of the passage' therethrough of the shank of the connecter. Upon the top of the head of the Connector and to the washer is glued the usual tip 23.
In positioning the parts, after the s'ocket in the body has been bored-and the spring has been secured' within the spring tube, the tube is forced into the socket where it is held by friction. With an appropriate tool like a button 'hook the hook of the spring is engaged and then pulled till it extends beyond the end of the tube when it is temporarily secured in that position. The eye of the .Connector is then hooked onto the spring and the spring is released thereby drawing the shank of the Connector into` the tube and' firmly positioning the tip on the end of the cue where it isheld by the spring. By having a number of extra tips, in case a tip breaks or is damaged too much for use it is easy to remove itand put on a new one, If desired the tip could be glued direct to the Connector and the spring could be secured in any suitable manner in the socket without the use of the tube but I prefer to use a washer as described and to use the tube as it renders thc end of the cue stronger than without it. i
Having described my invention What I claim is:
'A billiard cue comprising a body having a socket in the tip end thereof; a tube mounted in said socket, said tube having a notch in the outer end; a Connector having a shank adapted to fit in the notch in said tube, said shank having an eye theren; a have hereunto subscribed my name this 61th Washer secued tohsad Connector; a tip seday of February, 1914. cured to sai Was er; and a spring mount- 1 ed in said tube and having one end Secured DANIEL VVHITCOMB' 5 to the tube and the other end removably Wtnesses:
connected to the connecter. FRANK VVATERFIELD,
In Wtness that I claim the foregong I Gr. E. HARPHAM.
