PATENT OEEIcE.
BlLLlARD-CUE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 773,189, dated October 25, 1904. Application filed March 3, 1904. Serial No. 196,262. (No model.)
To all whmn, it may concern.-
Be it known that we, ALBERT BOURGET and FRANK ROBERT, J r., citizens of the United States, and residing at Turners Falls, in the county of Franklin and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Billiard-Cues, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to cues for playing billiards, pool, and similar games; and the object of the invention is to provide a one of this class with improved means for holding chalk, whereby the chalk will always be at hand and convenient for use.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of our improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a side view of a billiard or similar cue provided with our improvement; Fig. 2, a sectional side view of the butt or handle end thereof; Fig. 3, an end View looking in the direction of the arrow m of Fig. 1;
E and Fig. 4, a View similar to Fig. 3, but showing the parts in a different position.
In the drawings forming part of this specification we have shown at man ordinary billiard-cue, and in the practice of our invention we form in the butt or handle end thereof a recess 6, which is preferably circular in crosssection and the outer end portion of which is enlarged, as shown at 6 and in one side of the enlarged portion 6 of the recess Z) is secured by means of a pin 0 or in any desired manner a loop-shaped spring (Z. The sides of the loop-shaped spring (Z are brought together, as shown at (1*, and passed out through an opening 6 in the side of the cue opposite the point where the spring is secured, as shown at c, and the part or parts (Z of the spring (Z are provided with a knob or head (Z By pressing on the knob or head or the separate parts of the spring (Z will be expanded into the form of a circle, as shown in Fig. i, and a piece of chalk, as shown at f, may be inserted into the recess 6, and by removing the pressure on the part (Z3 of the spring d the separate parts of said spring within the enlarged portion 6 0f the recess 6 will contract, as shown in Fig. 3, and will hold the chalkf in the recess 6, and when it is desired to use the chalk pressure is again applied to the part d3 of the spring d and the separate parts of said spring are expanded, as shown in Fig. 4, and the chalk will drop out and may be used in the usual manner.
Our improvement does not add materially to the cost of the cue, and changes in and modifications of the construction described may be made without departing from the spirit of our invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A billiard or other one provided in the butt or handle end thereof with a recess which opens outwardly, and a loop-shaped spring one end of which is secured at one side of said recess and the sides of which are brought together at the opposite end and passed outwardly through an opening in the side of the cue, substantially as shown and described.
2. A billiard or other cue provided in the butt or handle end thereof with a recess which opens outwardly and the outer portion of which is enlarged annularly, and a loopshaped spring one end of which is secured at one side of the enlarged portion of said recess and the sides of which are brought together at the opposite end and passed outwardly through an opening in the side of the cue, and provided with a knob or head, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our invention we have signed our names, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 20th day of February, 190 i.
ALBERT BOURGET. FRANK ROBERT, JR.
