CHALK HOLDER.
No. 601,779. Patented Apr. 5, 1898.
FIG. 2
PETERS ca.- PuorouTHcn, wunmGTON. 0. c.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE P. ROBERTS, OF FREMONT, OHIO.
CHALK-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 601,77 9, dated April 5, 1898.
Application filed March 2 1897.
To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, GEORGE P. ROBERTS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fremont, in the county of Sandusky and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chalk-Holders; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in chalk-holders, and has particular reference to that class of holders used in connection with the games of billiards, pool, &c.
The invention consists of a cone-shaped holder, hollow, for the reception of chalk, so constructed that when the chalk is placed therein it will be held therein by friction and will remain until worn out or intentionally removed.
The invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of the several parts in combination, as illustrated in the drawings, described in the specification, and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawings, Figure l is a view of my improved chalk-holder appliedto the hand ready for use. Fig. 2 is an enlarged view of the device with the attaching-band broken away to more clearly show the groove in said device. Fig. 3 is a detail. Fig. 4 is a view showing a flange around one end of the device to prevent the chalk being thrust through the holder when applied to the end of the cue.
Like letters indicate like parts in all the figures.
Referring to the drawings by letters, 13 represents the body of the holder, which is conical in shape and is constructed of any suit able material, such as iron, tin, copper, pa per, &c.-
In one wall of the holder, to the inside thereof, is a longitudinal groove or channel I), in which is placed and held a strap or band a, of tape, leather, rubber, or other suitable material, for holding the holder to the hand during the progress of the game.
In Fig. 2 the end of the band a is broken away for the purpose of more clearly showing the groove 12 in the holder. In the completed device the ends of the band are secured to- $erlal No. 625,750. (No model.)
gether by sewing or otherwise and fit into the groove 1) in the holder.
e is a conical piece of chalk adapted to fit into the conical shaped holder and binds against the sides of said holder and the band a, being held in said holder by friction, as is evident.
In Fig. 4 I have shown a modification of the holder in which the conical body Bis provided at its small end with a flange B, against which the chalk abuts when in place in the holder, andinstead of the groove in the wall of saidbody I have-shown links 0 c, to which is secured the hand-band a.
When it is desired to use this device, the player slips his hand in theband a, and the device is then secured to the hand by means of said band and rests in the palm thereof. The band a is preferably of elastic material, but may be of any other desirable kind. When it is desired to chalk the cue, the fingers of the hand areclosed down upon the holder, which by reason of the shape thereof will be securely held in the hand. The tip of the one is then placed againstthe chalk and the cue chalked inthe usual manner.
. Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. A chalk-holder consisting of a conicalv body B, a longitudinal groove in the wall thereof and a strap or band secured in said groove and of such length as to hold said holder to the hand, asset forth.
2. A chalk-holder consisting of a conical body B, a band or strap a secured thereto and means for holding said strap or band to the holder, in combination .Witha chalk fitting into said holder and held therein by friction.
3. A chalk-holder consisting of a conical 5 body B,a longitudinal groove in the wall thereof entering throughout its entire length, and an elastic strap or band secured in said groove, and of such lengthas to hold said' holder to the hand in combination with a conical piece of chalk or other suitable material, held'in said body B by binding against the inner wall thereof and against the elastic band, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence two witnesses.
' GEORGE P. ROBERTS.
