P. G. PARNHAM. GUEUHALK 501mm.
No. 552,171. Patented Dec. 3 1, 1895.
- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK G. FARNHAM, OF I-IONESDALE, PENNSYLVANIA.
CUE-CHALK HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 552,1? 1, dated December 31, 1895.
Application filed May 11, 1895. Serial N0. 548,971. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK G. FARNHAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Honesdale, in the county of Wayne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cue-Chalk Holders,
of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanyin g drawings.
My invention relates to cue-chalk holders, and its object is to hold the chalk securely in a convenient manner and ready for. instant use.
Ordinarily billiard-cue chalk is made in square blocks and deposited in pockets attached to the table in diiferent places. lVhen playing, these pieces of chalk are removed from the pockets and placed along the rail of the table, where they are liable to get knocked off upon the floor and broken, or upon the bed of the table, which interferes with the balls. Very often, also, all the pieces will be left on the rail at one end or one side of the table, requiring the player to walk around the table and back again, or take his chances and play the shot without chalking his cue, which, as a rule, is followed by a miscue. My device is intended to overcome these difficulties by carrying the chalk in a suitable holder upon a convenient place on the hand of the player, where it is always ready for use.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device attached to the one -hand of a right-hand player. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the device detached from the hand, the holder being removed. Fig. 3 is a cross-section of same. Fig. 4: shows the device applied to the shoe.
In the drawings, the band holding the chalk is indicated at B and encircles the hand, as shown in Fig. 1, the opening g being made for the passage of the thumb. The ends of the strap are connected by a link m, and one of the ends is turned back and provided with a slip-buckle f to enable the size of the strap to be increased or diminished. To quickly remove or secure the device a spring-button connection is made in the length of the strap, as shown at E, Fig. 3. Through an opening H made in the band B is inserted the chalk.- holder D, having a flange a fitting around the opening and a central cup-shaped part b projecting through the opening. The chalk A is placed in the cup and then a cap 0 is screwed upon the cup-shaped holder 1), and the flange d of the cap 0 overhangs the cup and holds the chalk in place.
The chalk is first placed in the cup I), which is then slipped up through the hole H in band B, and the cap 0 is screwed down, binding them all securely together. The thumb is then passed through the hole 9 on band B, and the strap N brought around and connected by the spring-button E and o. I do not confine myself to this exact construction or position of pad on the hand. The chalk-holder may be made of metal, in different ways, or of soft rubber or celluloid, and the band, or any portion of it, may be of elastic webbing, without departing from the spirit of my invention. I prefer to apply the device to the cue-hand of the player, and make them right and left handed; but the bands can be made to fit the inside of the hands or fingers of the left hand, or, as it is called, the bridgehand, left or right.
I may apply the device by a slight change in the construction of the holding-band to the shoe, as shown in Fig. 4, the chalk being supported on the front part of the shoe and within easy reach of the end of the one in the hands of the player.
I claim- 1. In combination with a strap or band adapted to be held upon the hand or foot, a chalk holder carried thereby, substantially as described.
2. A chalk holder and means for securing it to the hand or foot, substantially as described.
3. A chalk holder comprising a cup for the chalk, means for holding it to the hand or foot and a removable cap therefor, substantially as described.
4e. In combination, the band, and the removable chalk cup, substantially as described.
5. In combination, the band having the thumb opening and the opening H for the chalk cup, the cup fitted thereto and the removable cap, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRANK G". FARNHAM.
