JOHN T. MCGILLICUDDY, OF 'WORCES'IER, MASSACHUSETTS.
DEVICE FOR USE IN PLAYING GOLF.
Application filed October 19, 1914. Serial No. 867,389.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN T. MoGILLr- CUDDY, a citizen of the United States, residing at lVorcester, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Device for Use in Playing Golf, of which the following is a specification.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive means for preventing the player from raising or turning his head and thus forcing him to keep his eye on the ball.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front view showing a preferred embodiment of the invention and illustrating the manner in which it is worn, and Fig. 2 is a side view of a portion of the device on enlarged scale." Fig. 3 is a detail view illustrating the manner of connecting the elastic member to the belt by means of the retaining member.
()ne of the most important and difiicult things to remember in playing the game of golf is to avoid the raising and turning of the head and consequently keeping the at tention concentrated on the ball and play. This invention is designed to enable the player to observe this rule and to keep him constantly in mind of it and at the same time to prevent him from turning his head far to the side.
The invention is shown as embodied in a form in which it involves four parts; first, a belt A adapted to be worn by the player and preferably worn immediately under the arms constituting an anchoring or holding device; second, a retaining member B secured to the belt at the front thereof; third, an elastic member C secured by the retain.- ing member in position to extend upwardly therefrom; and fourth, a member D secured to the end of the elastic member and adapt ed to be held between theteeth of the wearer.
The belt A may be of any desired character and is shown in an ordinary simple form as consisting of a band of elastic material held at the end by an ordinary buckle a. The retaining member B is shown as consisting of a simple stamping of sheet metal having two longitudinal spaces for receiving the elastic member C. This elastic member preferably consists of a hollow Specification of Letters Patent.
tube so it will not easily become broken and if it does, Will not snap up and hit the wearer. The member D, which is held in the mouth, preferably consists of a piece of soft rubber and has a groove d in the back and a projection 03 on the front so it can be held conveniently between the teeth. In practice, the article is worn as shown in Fig. l. Whenever the player starts to move his head to one side or the other, he will feel the pull on the elastic tube and will be reminded of the fact that he should face to the front and keep his eye on the ball. Moreover, if in case of excitement he does not pay attention to this reminder, the elastic tube is strong enough to prevent him from turning his head to any great distance.
Although I have illustrated and de scribed only a single embodiment of the invention, 1' am aware of the fact that modifications can be made therein by any person skilled in the art without departing from the scope of the invention as expressed in the claims. Therefore, ll do not wish to be limited to all the features of construction herein shown and described, but
What I do claim is 1. An article for use in playing golf, comprising a device to be held between the teeth, and a flexible member connected therewith and adapted to be secured to the person.
2. An article for use in playing golf, comprising a device to be held in the mouth, an anchoring device, and an elastic connection between the two.
3. An article of the class described comprising a belt adapted to be worn on the person, an elastic member connected with the belt at the front thereof, and a member at the end of said member adapted to be held in the mouth for the purpose described.
4. An article of the class described comprising a belt adapted to be worn under the arms and having at the center of the front thereof a retaining member, an elastic tube connected with said retaining member and adapted to extend upwardly therefrom, and a soft rubber member secured to the end of said tube and adapted to be held in the mouth of the wearer.
5. An article of the class described comprising a belt, a retaining member thereon,
an elastic tube connected with said retain- In testimony whereof I have hereunto set ing member and adapted to extend upmy hand, in the presence of two subscribwardly therefrom, and a soft rubber me'ming witnesses.
ber secured to the end of said tube and JOHN T. MGGILLIOUDDY. adapted to be held in the mouth of the Witnesses: wearer,v said soft rubber member'having a, ALBERT E. FAY,
groove therein for receiving the teeth. C. E. MCGrILLICUDDY.
