UNITED STATES 'PATENT l OFFICE.
ANNA C. CLOUD, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
DEVICE FOR `QORRECTING FAClAL DEFECTS.
SPECIFICATION forming 'part of Letters Patenelvo. 724,812, dated April 7, 190e. Application filed December 26, 1902. Serial No. 136,577. (No model.)
T0 all whom, it may con/cerro:
Be it known that I, ANNA C. CLOUD, a citilzen of the United States, residing atPhiladelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements iu Devices for Correcting Facial Defects; andI do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to a device for correcting facial defects, and more particularly to a device or bandage adapted to correct double chins and prevent the formation of lines around the mouth.
The object of the invention is to provide a device of this character that can be worn at night while the wearer sleeps without the slightest discomfort, or,in fact,it may be Worn at any time and will not interfere to any considerable extent with the movement of the mouth or lower jaw in speaking should the device be worn in the day.
A further object is to provide a simple and durable device of this character that can be readily adjusted in place and removed.
-The invention consists in the main of a section formed of soft flexible material adapted to embrace the chin and hold the same in normal position and prevent the flesh adjacent to the sides of the nose and upper lip from falling and causing lines around the mouth, the device being so formed that they front or forward portion thereof presents a depression or pocket in which the chin fits comfortably and provided with -stiffened material at its Vends to prevent the chin-section folding or being drawn together at the ends when in use.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will suggestthemselves during the course of the following description, and the points of novelty will'be set forth in the claims.
In thedrawings, Figure l is a profile showing the defects that the device is designed to remedy. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the application of the device. Fig. 3 is a plan View of the same, showing more clearly the .shown in Fig. 2.
lengthened front portion thereof and the end stays or stiffening material; and Fig. 4 is a section taken about on the line o: fr, Fig. 3, showing the stiffening and binding.
Referring to the drawings, numeral l indicates the central section, adapted to embrace the chin, which in carrying out myinvention I form of soft preferably slightly elastic fabric, such as silk or cotton, and provide the same with a front binding 2 and a rear binding 3, the front bindingV being of greater length than the binding 3, so that a pocketf will-be formed for the comfortable reception of the chin.
The numeral 5 indicates the end binding, which is stitched to the fabric of section l and embraces the ends of said section and the stiffening-stays 6, which may be formed of whalebone or other resilient material.
To the corners of the section l I stitch or otherwise secure four elastic strips 7 that lit around the ears and connect their outer ends by suitably-covered stays 8, preferably of the same material as that used at the ends of the central section, and to the coveringof these stays is finally attached ribbons 9, that are carried above the head and haveV their ends secured together by tying, as clearly I have found in practice that the use of the bandage has produced marked and favorable results and where faithfully used has entirely removed or corrected a double chin of marked prominence and removed the lines that form around the mouth and nose as a result of the K drawing of the flesh due in a measure to the excess of flesh upon the lower part of the face.
Having described the invention, what I claim is- 1. Adevice of the character described, comprising a central section of iiexible material adapted to embrace the chin and provided with stiffened end stays, and suitable securing devices attached to the central section whereby the device is held in place, substantially as described.
' 2. Adevice of the character described, comprising a central section of flexible material having stiffened ends as shown, securingstrips attached to the corners of the device and having their ends spaced apart by stays,
securing devices secured to the said stays whereby the whole device is held in position upon the chin.
3. A device ofthe character described, com prising a section of iexible material formed of greater length at its front than at its rear thereby forming a pocket, suitable stays attached to the ends of said section whereby the ends are prevented from drawing together, elastic strips secured to the corners of the central section and having their outer ends secured to and spaced apart by suitable stays, and ribbons attached to said stays whereby the device is held in position, substantially as described.
4. A device of the characterdescribed, comprising a central chin-embracing section of iiexible material formed with a pocket therein and having its ends held apart by resilient stays, elastic strips secured to the corners of said section adapted for the passage of the ears in adjusting the device, and having;r their outer ends united by stays, and suitable ribbons secured to the stays whereby the device is held in adjusted position.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ANNA C. CLOUD.
