Specification of Letters Patent. P t nted Mar. 22, 1921 Application filed February 21, 1920. Serial No. 360,523.
The present invention rel tes forshaping noses, and has for its principal object, to provide an improvement of the device described and shown in my U. S: Patent l-1,100,991 of June23, 1914, withthe view of rendering the device more effective andofsimplifyingits construction and re ducing its cost of manufacture. a lVith this and other objects in View, my
invention 1 consists in the [novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be herelnafter fully described and do fined in the appended claims.
In .the i accompanying drawing wh ch forms part ofthisspecification and in which similar reference characters .denote corre-:
sponding parts rFigureswl and 2 illustrate the use of thedevioe in a front and rear view; Fig. 3 is a central sectmn of myde vice, designed -TfOT-dOIIg-OI drooping noses; Fig. sis a=perspective view thereof; Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a modified form of construction designed for broad, flat and broken noses; %Fig.6 is a cross section there of; Fig. 7 shows the modified devlce muse, and Fig. 8 ist a perspective view of a fur;
ther modification.
Referring tolthe drawing more in detail,
and first to the construction illustratediu Figs. 1 4C inclusive lHdenotesthe frame or form made of porous light Weight material cut out substantially as the form of my device described and shown in my earlier patent to conform with the shape ofnormally builtnoses in all sizes. The-devicenow un der consideration 18 designed to be used for reshaping abnormally "long bumpy and drooping noses, and for supporting 1njured ones. WlhlYClBfOIIIlllllQS of such character, it is' necessar'y toraise the cartilage and exert a continuous gentle pressureion the-fleshy parts of the nose thereby filling up *the hollows atthe-b ase or sides of the nose generally presentin such cases, and obtaining the results of a normally shaped nose; To "be effective the device must be of correct size and normal shape and held in a to devices proper position and with due pressure on the superfluous parts during the treatment. To this end I provide onthe sides of the form 1 along its longitudinal edgesppads or cushions 2 each fixed at its ends by stitchare preferably Inade of tubular pieces of iabrlc hav1ng' afilling of suitable soft material. Passed transversely over the body 1 and through the crevices 2 formed'between the pads 2 and the body l isa band 3,:(1Fig,
4). The parts of the bandlextending out- Wardlythrough the slots or crevices 2 are folded-in opposlte directionsso aslto extend over and bear on the pads 2 and around the faceand tied atthe back ofthe lhead, as shown 1n F1g. 2. The pads 2 are lmadeof such a thicknessthat they will project wfroin the sides of the nose beyondlthecheek-bones.
The same serve a double purpose, namely, first l to exert a gentle pressure against the sides of the broad nose when the band 3 1s drawn taut and secondly to holdthe parts of the band extendingoverthe cheek-bones evenly raisedwso as to prevent undue pressure on the cheekbones.
mg or otherwlse to the body 1. These pads Thetongue-shaped part 5 ofltlie'body 1,
which is adapted to extend "over and rest against the cartilage, is held with pressure against thelatterby alband or tape (iywhich iscapable ofbeing attachedltothe body 1 and the tongue 5, and is provided with suitable adjustment means which permit adjustment according ea different sizes and will hold the shaper in proper position. This tapeis adaptedtobe passed around the face and tied at the back oflthe head, as shown in Fig; 2.
a A. seriesof snapmemhers 7, eyelets or the like may be provided on each side of the portion of the: band 6 which extends over the tongue 5 and counterparts 7' on-thelbody 1, to a] low the band'o of being adjustably 'las tened to the body 1 in order wto render it possible to remove the tape forcleansing the nose, sterilizing the 1 shaper, adjusting the tape or band according to the pressure desired or the sizeof the nose a to be treated and securing complete comfort until the wearer is accustomed to the necessarylpres sure against the cartilage. The band 8 is adapted to be suitably fixed to the body 1 to extend centrally over the forehead and the back of the head. This tape is parted longitudinally at its free end to form two strips 8, 8 adapted to be folded over the top part of the head in opposite direction and to be tied together as at 9 (Fig. 1).
In applying the device,'the. central tape 8 is first folded over the head and passed to the back. Next the tape 6 and then the tape 3 are folded over the rear end of the tape 8 and tied in back, as described. Thereupon, the strips 8, and 8 of the tape 8 are folded over the tapes 3 and 5 and tied together as shown in Fig. 1. I
On drawing the tape 8 taut the tongue 5 will be raised to press againstthe cartilage, raising the latter into the desired shape.
By the crossing over and tightening of the band 3 the pads 2 will be caused to exert V a gentle pressure against the sides of the nose thereby building up the broad fiat nose in the height and preventlng the nose from spreading sidewise.
. Fornoses known as fiat or broad noses a somewhat different treatment is used, as the same require a pressure alongthe entire face ofeach side of the nose. 7
, To this end a plate shaped member 10. of
more. rigid material than the body 1, preferably celluloid or the like, is attached to the flexible body to extend over a comparatively large area of each side of the body 1.
r The tape 11 when crossed over the pads 2,
'as shown in ig. 7, will cause the members 10 to support a fracture and to press against the 'sides of the nose. By a continued performance of such'treatment the nose will be restored to normal shape. If the abnormality be due toa fracture which normally results in crooked, flat or humped lines,
7 such lines by theuse of my mold, will soon be restored to normal shape. .For holding thisfdevice in'position bands 11 and 12, similar to bands Sand 8, maybe used. InFig. 8 the body or frame 13 is made of a perforated piece of celluloid recessed atll, 15, 16 and 17 to allow the passage and attachment of the tapes 18, 19 and 20, corre sponding to tapes 3, 6 and 8 in the first described construction.
