ANTl-SNORING DEVICE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 460,451, dated September 29, 1891.

To all whom it may concern/.-

Be it known that I, LINUs H. SHAW, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of the city of Brockton, in the county of Plymouth, in the State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improved Anti-Snoring Device, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of this invention is to provide means to be worn by persons when sleeping to prevent snoring.

The means of this invention, and which for convenience is designated an anti-snoring device, consist, in substance, of a band to surround and to be held on the neck of the person, a band to cross the front, and a band to cross under, and each thereof to extend around the sidesof the chin, in combination with mechanism composed, essentially, of a semicircular frame, at its opposite ends pivoted to opposite sides of said neckband and projected forward under the chin, a slide-bar at each end, held on and free to slide along said frame, and yielding spring-arms, one at each side of the chin and both held on said slide-bar, and each at its upper end portion having an arm pivoted thereon and to which said chin-bands at their opposite ends are fastened, all substantially as hereinafter described.

In the drawings forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side View of the antisnoring device of this invention and illustrated as in use. Fig. 2 is a front View of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan View of the device.

In the drawings, A is the neckband.

B and O are the two chin-bands.

D is the semicircular frame.

E is the slide-bar, at its opposite ends held on and free to move along the frame D.

F F are the side spring-arms, held on said slide-bar, and G G2 are crank-arms, each pivoted' to one of said side arms at its upper end portion, and to these armsthe opposite ends of the two chin-bands are attached.

The neckband A may be any band which is suitable to surround and to be held on the neck without strain on or annoyance to the wearer-as, for illustration, a split springband of metal suitably covered or otherwise protected or the usual neckband of the nightgown, &c. The semicircular frame D at its opposite ends is hung on pivots a of said neckband and thence extends forward, so as, with the neckband in position on the wearer, to lie under and below the chin. The slide-bar E at its opposite end portions has tubular blocks 1') b, which engage and so hold the slide-bar on and adapt it for movement along said frame D, and, again, H is a rod that extends lengthwise along the upper side and is supported in earpieces at d at each end portion of said slide-bar.

The spring-arms F F are on the opposite sides of the chin, one on each side, and, as particularly shown, they are continuous with reverse coils f, surrounding the rod H, held on slide-bar, as has been explained, and at their central portion looped about the frame D, all so that elasticity and spring are imparted thereby to the arms to resist strain or tension thereon. v

The chin-bands may be made of cloth or other like or suitable material and the band Badapted to cross the front and the band 0 to cross under and both to extend around on each side of the chin, and at their opposite ends they are fastened in any suitable manner to the cranloarms G G pivoted, as described, to the upper ends of the side springarms.

In the practical use of the device explained the chin-bands serve to hold the chin firmly yet yieldingly against movement, and thereby the mouth held from opening and so snoring is prevented, it being Very well known that snoring results from an opening and consequent breathing through the mouth instead of through the nostrils. The connection of these chin-bands with the neckband A, which has been described, plainly allows perfect freedom of movement of the device should strain come on it in any direction because of -changes in position of the head or body of the wearer while sleeping.
