F. B. SCOTT.

Patented Oct; 25, 1870.
amt $211335 game carat.
FRANCIS B.'SCOTT,. CF. LANCASTER, NEW YORK/ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND C. S. S. LENNCX, OF TOWNSEND, MASSACHUSETTS.
Letters Patent Ila-168,638, dated October 25,1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN RElN-HOLDERS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and makingpart of the same I, FRANCIS B. Scorer, of the town of Lancaster, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invent-ed a certain new and improved Rein-Bolder, of which the following is a specification.
My improvement relates to a device 'which is applied to the guiding-reins of a bridle at a point where they are grasped by the hand,.so as to enable the driver to more easily hold .the same from slipping throughthe hands.
The invention consists of a strap-attachment, made of elastic or semi-elastic material, as rubber or leather, provided with a series of loops for the passage of the reins; Inapplying it thereto the elasticity of the material causing the attachment, as thereins are drawn taut, to contract and hug the latter, so as to retain it in place thereon, and prevent slipping, with out the use of a buckle or other special fiistening.
As represented in the accompanying drawing-v Figure I is a longitudinal section through one of my improved holders, arranged on a rein.
Figure II is a plan view of the outer or face side.
Like letters of reference designate like parts in eachof the figures.
A represents the rein;
B, my improved holder; and
I) I), the loops thereofiothrough which the reins pass.
I prefer and design to cast the holders of rubber,,
of substantially the form shown, with the edges between the loops scalloped o'r recessed, (as shown'at c, Fig. 11,) so that when grasped by the hand the main pressure of the latter will come on the holder at the edges opposite the loops, which 'will serve to increase, by direct pressure, the adherence'of the latter to the reins; while the hand, fitting'in the sea lops c, is enabled to take a firmer hold, whereby botlm the holder and the hand are prevented from slipping,
and tlievstrain on the hands which results fromthe the forward ends of each differing from the rear ends,
and the holders then arranged on the reins wrththe position of one reversed. v
I prefer to make my improved holders of suflicient length to allowof a slight adjustmentof the handf therewith, as'required by the change in the position of the animals head in turning to either side.
Itis also desirable that the. loops should be so formed as to permit of the passage of the rein in a nearly straight direction, 3 My improved holder is readily ad usted on the rein, is selt retaining, and presents an ornamental ap-ipcarance.
A series of disconnect-ed elastic rings slipped over 7 the rein might be used as a holder, but I prefer conv structing it in one piece,'as shown.
\Vhat 'I claim as my invention 1s-- The self-retaining elastic or semi-elastic reiirholder B, composed of two or more, loops 7) I), connected to" gether in one piece, constructed substantially as hereinbefore set forth.
FRANCIS B. SCOTT.
