DEVICE FOR CONTROLLING RUNAWAY HORSES.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 299,174, dated May 27, 1884:.

Be it known that I, DANIEL J. SHAY, of the city of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented an Improved Device for Controlling Runaway Horses; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.

The object of this invention is to provide a simple and convenient device, to be used either in riding or driving, which will give the rider or driver perfect control over his horse, and enable him to stop his horse whenever the same may commence to run. In order to accomplish this, I use a strap having a ring attached to each end. This strap I pass over the horses head, under the bridle, and pass the rings on the ends thereof through the ordinary bit-rings, and attach said rings on said strap to the reins, one on each side, instead of attaching the reins directly to the bit-rings, so that the strap slides in the bit-rings, and the driver or rider by pulling on the reins connected therewith forces the bit upward and backward into the corners or angles of the horses mouth, and thereby can effectually stop the horse whenever he desires to do so.

The invention consists in the combination, with an ordinary bridle and its bit-rings, of an independent and removable strap adapted to be passed over the horses head and through the bit-rings, and to slide in the latter, and provided at its ends with rings or similar means whereby said strap is attached to the reins, all as hereinafter particularly set forth.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 shows a perspective view of my device, and Fig. 2 shows the same applied to a horses head.

Similar letters of reference indicate the same parts in both of said figures.

My improved device may be used in connection with any of the bridles or headstalls in ordinary use.

In the drawings, a may represent the bitrings, b the cheek-straps, c the brow-band, d the throat-1atch, and f the reins, all of which may be of suitable form and construction.

B is a strap having a ring, m, attached to each end thereof. This strap is passed over the head of the horse, immediately behind his ears, and under the cheek-straps b, and its;

rings at are passed through the bit-rings a, and then connected to the reins f by a buckle or a snap-hook at the ends of the latter. The said strap B may be in two parts, said parts being connected by means of a buckle, a, so as to admit of its being lengthened or shortened to fit the head of the horse on which it is used.

It will be seen that the reins f are not connected directly to the bit-rings, as usual, but are connected to the strap B by the rings on at the ends of said strap, and that the said strap is free to slide or run in the bit-rings. and consequent] y whenever the reins are pulled tight the bit is forced directly into the corners or angles of the mouth of the horse, which effectually prevents him from running, or stops him if he has commenced to run away.

I am aware of the Patent No. 229,7 92, to R. Arnold, showing a bridle in which the reins are attached to the head-piece and arranged to slide in the bit-rings, which said construction I do not claim, but hereby disclaim, in that the device for controlling the horse is fastened to and forms part of the bridle, while in my invention the device is detached and separate from the bridle, so that the latter can be used either with or without my improved device, as desired, thereby avoiding the necessity for using a special bridle in connection with the same. 1
