'1 4 :UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES" C. GILL, OF BOSTON, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JOHN M. FRENCH, OF CHELSEA, MASSACHUSETTS.
DEVICE FOR CONTROLLING HORSES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 329,448, dated November 3, 1885.
Application filed March 16, 1885. Serial No. 155,994. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES C. GILL, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Devices for Controlling Horses, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object to provide an improved device for application to a horses head to.support the bit and reins and enable the driver to pull the bit upwardly into the corners of the mouth, and thus control the animal more perfectly than by the ordinary arrangement of bit and reins.
The invention consists in a nose-band 0r strap-lugs supporting pulleys or rollers at the opposite sides of the horses head, over which pulleys pass straps or rein-sections, which are connected to the bit and to the driving-reins, said nose-band having suitable straps whereby it is held in place on a horses head, as I will now proceed to describe.
Of the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my improved device. Fig. 2 represents a similar view of the metal band detached. Fig. 3 represents the position of my improved device 011 a horses head when used with an ordinary bridle.
The same letters of reference indicate the same parts in all the figures.
In the drawings, a represents a nose-band composed of a strip of flexible metal, 2, having at its ends metal ears or lugs 3 3, which may be made in the same piece with the band The metal strip and its lugs have asuitable leather casing or covering, to which are attached leather straps 4 4, the whole forming a band which passes around the horses head at a point above the mouth, the metal strip 2 be ing at the front and the lugs 3 3 at the sides'of the head, over the mouth.
0 represents a strap passing over the top of the head and supporting the nose-band in substantially the position shown in Fig. 3.
d d represent rollers turning freely on studs f f, rigidly attached to the lugs3 3, the rollers being outside of the leather casing and projecting outwardly from the outer sides of said lugs.
h h represent rounded straps or rein-sections passing over the rollers d d, and provided at the lower ends with snap-hooks or other suitable means for attachment to the reins of a bridle-bit, Land at their upper ends with rings, to which the driving-reins j j are attached; or, if preferred, the rounded sections h may be integral parts of the reins. The straps or reinsections are prevented from getting off from the rollers d d by guard-plates e e,attached to the lugs 3 3 and to the outer ends of the studs on which the rollers d d are journaled. It will be seen that when the reins are pulled by the driver the pressure on the horses head will be exerted simultaneously at three points, viz: the bit will be drawn upwardly against the corners of the mouth, the nose-band will be drawn backwardly against the nose, and the strap a will be drawn downwardly against the top of the head. It has been found that the pressures thus exerted enable the most vicious and hard-bitted horses to be easily controlled.
The bit maybe attached in the usual manner to an ordinary bridle, as shown in Fig. 3, or
may be connected by straps or chains to the nose-band, so that the improved device can be used to support the bit, the usual bridle being dispensed with. The metallic strip 2, supporting the rollers d d, keeps the rollers in position and enables them to support the pressure exerted on them by the reins. I do not limit myself, however, to the metallic strip, as the nose-band may be made entirely of leather without departing from the spirit of my invention.
I claim-- 1. The improved horse-controlling device, composed of the nose-band having the side rollers, d d, and supporting-strap c, and the rein-sections adapted to move on said rollers, and having means for attachment to a bit, as set forth.
2. The nose band composed of the metal portion having the rigid studs f f, and the connecting-straps 4, and the rollers d on said studs, combined with the rein-sections adapted to move on the rollers, and the supporting strap, as set forth.
3. The combination, with a bridle and its bit, of the controlling device or attachment composed of the nose-band having the side rollers,
the supportingstraoand the rein-sectionssup- In t'estimony whereof-I have signed my name ported by said rollers and connected to the tothis specification, in the presen'ee'of two subbit, as set forth. scribing witnesses, this 12th day of March,
4. The nose-band composed of the metal 1885. portion having the rigid studs f, the connectingstraps4 4, the rollers d d on said studs, and the guard-plates e e, combined with the i Supporting-strap c, and the rein-sections sup- Witnesses: ported by the rollers and kept in place by the [o guard-plates, as set forth. r
