SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 520,381, dated May 22, 1894.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES G. SHERIFF, a citizen of the United States of America, residlng at Hot Sulphur Springs, in the county of Grand and State of Colorado, have invented certaln new and useful Improvements in Halters; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the inventlon, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanymg drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to improvements in halters, and consists of the features hereinafter described and claimed, all of which w1ll be fully understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which is illustrated an embodiment thereof.

In the drawings, Figurel is a perspective view of my improved device. Fig. 2 illustrates the halter in position for use. Fig. 3 1s an elevation of the neck-piece in detail.

6 and 8 respectively, whereby the halter may be adjusted to fit the heads of different sized animals, from large horses to small colts. The

part 8 is forked as shown at 8, and the two arms of the fork are connected by the part 9 whose extremities are sewed to said arms. The function of the part 9 is to chokeacribing peculiarities or habits of cribbers. The

part 8 must be so buckled that while it allows the animal room to breathe freely when holding the head and neck in the normal position, it will at the same time cause the part 9 to choke him if he attempts the habits heretofore stated. Below the fork 8 its arms are connected by a loop 14, and continue downward where they are sewed together, forming the stem 10 which is connected with the part 12 by a ring 15 into which the hitching strap 16 is buckled.

One important object of my improved halter is to confine the pull or strain upon the hitching strap to the neck of the animal through the medium of part8, while in the ordinary construction of halters, the pull is on the nose piece which interferes with breathing and renders the horse ugly and vicious.

The anti-cribbing attachment is another important feature, while the general construction of the halter and the relation of its parts are such as to embody to the fullest extent, all the requirements in an article of this class.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- As an improved article of manufacture, the halterherein described, consisting of the head piece, the forked neck piece provided with the anti-cribbing attachment 9 consisting of a strap having its extremities made fast to the arms of the fork, the brow band connecting the head and neck pieces, the nose piece supported by the head piece, the jaw piece connected with the nose piece, and the stem 0on5 necting the fork of the neck piece with the jaw piece, substantially as described.
