BASE-BALL GLOVE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 12, 1911.
Application filed March 1c, 1910. Serial No. 550,105.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, SAMUEL CLINE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Base-Ball Gloves, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to base ball gloves, and pertains more particularly to the pattern and arrangement of the finger and thumb portions, and also to the arrangement of the padding structure carried therein in its relation to the novel construction of the finger and thumb portions of the glove.
The object of my invention is to produce a base ball finger glove adapted to be worn with equal facility upon either the right or left hand.
A further object thereof is to provide in a glove of this character three padded intermediate finger structures conveniently shaped to fit upon the first three fingers of either hand, and having at each side thereof a padded stall structure adapted to interchangeably fit upon either the thumb or small finger of the hand; and a still further object of my invention is to provide a reinforcing heel upon the padding carried therein extending longitudinally along both of said outer stalls, and for other purposes to be hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating my invention, in which like reference numerals indicate similar parts, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the front of my glove; Fig. 2 is a similar view of its back, and Fig. 3 is a plan view of the padding carried therein.
Having reference to the drawings, 1 indicates the front or palm portion of my glove and 2 designates the back thereof, having the usual out out portion at 3, and the strap 4, the cover of which is made of suitable flexible material.
The front of the glove comprises the padded palm face 5 having a padded longitudinal medial finger stall 6 to accommodate the middle finger of either the right or left hand upon which it may be worn, upon each side of which is arranged a radial padded finger stall 7 and 8 of substantially identical size and shape adapted to comfortably contain either the index finger or the ring finger according to the hand upon which it is worn. Next to each of the last mentioned finger stalls 7 and 8, and somewhat shorter than each, are arranged the padded thumb-stalls 9 and 10, which are so shaped as to be adapted to alternately receive either the thumb or the small finger of the hand when the glove is interchangeably worn upon either the right or left hand of a player. Said thumbstalls may be connected with the next adjacent finger stalls by the reinforcing webs 11,
As shown in the drawings, a padding 12 is carried beneath the face of the glove, comprising the main body portion 13 which covers the palm of the hand and extends into the finger and thumb stalls of the glove. Upon said main body portion and at the thereof, is secured a curved heel 14: of padding material which is prolonged and extends along the face of the thumb-stalls 9 and 10, thus bracing and reinforcing same when used on the thumb or small finger of the hand.
It will be apparent from the foregoing description and by reference to the accompanying drawings, that the structure of glove comprising my invention may be comfortably worn with equal facility upon either the right or left hand, and that the padding carried therein and the curved heel at the base thereof extending longitudinally along the face of the thumb-stalls, together with the connecting webs bet-ween the thumb-stalls and the next adjacent finger-stalls reinforce and support the thumb and small finger of the hand upon which the glove is worn.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to be secured by Letters Patent, is
In a finger glove for base ball players, the combination with a flexible palm portion, of a longitudinal medial finger structure thereon, an independent and complete finger structure on said palm portion on each side of said medial finger structure adapted to interchangeably accommodate the index and ring fingers of the right or left hands, an enlarged complete stall next to each of the last mentioned finger structures adapted to interchangeably accommodate the thumb In testimony whereof, I have hereunto and small finger when Worn upon elther the signed my name to th1s specification, 1'11 the right or left'hand,' and a reinforcing heel presence of two suhscrlbmg Witnesses.
extending across the base of the palmpor- SAMUEL CLINE. tion of the glove and along the 'face of both Witnesses of the last mentioned outer stalls, substan- H. M. DITTIE,
tially as described. JOHN GAMBLE.
