Description

W. B. GOULD.
Stair-Rod Fasteners.
N0. 144,759. Patented Nov.18,1873.
IE I ifilizamvy j 4 WM W UNITED STATES PATENT. Orrron WILLIAM B. GOULD, OF MONTROSE, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN STAlR-ROD FASTENERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 144,759, dated November 18, 1873; application filed September 23, 1873.
CASE B.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM B. GOULD, of Montrose, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented an Improved Stair- Rod Fastener, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of my improved stair-rod fastener. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the same, showing the parts in position for removing and inserting the rod.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
This invention has for its object to improve the stair-rod fastener for which Letters Patent No. 62,027 were granted to me on the 12th day of February, 1867; and consists in using a screw-follower in one of the sockets or hollow tips, in place of the spring-follower described in my former patent.
In the accompanying drawing, the letters A B represent the pair of fasteners pertaining to one rod, 0, both made in the form of sockets or hollow tips of the shape required for receiving the ends of the rod 0; both also connected with the brackets a a, by which they are fastened to the stair-risers. One tip, A, has, by
' preference, an elastic cushion, b, of cork or other substance placed within it, while the follower d, in the shape of a metallic disk, is placed within the other hollow tip, B. This follower is attached to a screw-stem, e, that extends through a threaded aperture in the end of the tip B, a suitable knob, f, being formed on the outer end of such stem 0.
For inserting the rod, the follower is drawn into the hollow tip B in the manner shown in Fig. 2, so as to permit one end of the rod to be inserted into the tip B, and the other then put into the tip A. The follower is then screwed up toward the rod until the rod is firmly clamped between it and the cork or cushion b,- or, if such cushion is not used, between the follower and the end of the tip A.
The advantage of this form of fastener is chiefly to be found in the ease with which the rod 0 may be removed for cleaning" and re-inserted. Servants will find no difliculty in turning the knob f, and thus unscrewing or drawing outward the followers 01 to permit the removal of the rod, and of subsequently re-inserting and refastening the same. Another advantage is that the rod can be securely clamped, so as not to shake in its fastening.
I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The stair-rod fastener B, containing a follower, d, and a screw-spindle, e, to which said follower is attached, substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and described.
WILLIAM B. GOULD.
