EDVIN LASELLE MANSFILD, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
FLUE-CLENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 373,747, dated November 22, 1887.
Application filed September 15, 1886. Serial No. 213,617.
o aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN LnsELLE Mans- EIELD, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fine-Cleaners; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which Will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which forni a part of this specification, and in Whicli- Figure lis a perspective View of niy improved flue-cleaner rod adapted to receive two sets of cleaning material, which are shown in dotted line; and Fig. 2 is a view of the same with cleaning material attached and partly in section.
Like letters of referenccindicate corresponding parts throughout the tigurcs.
Hy invention has relation to flue-cleaners and instruments for like purposes; and it consists in the improved construction and combination of parts constituting the saine, as Will be hereinafter fully set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the cleaner-rod, at one end of which is formed an eye for the convenience of handling and for coupling extension sections to said rod, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1. The other end of the rod is 'provided with a securer consisting of a conical nut, E, screwed upon the end of the rod, two washers, F, and a nut, G. The conical nut prevents the cleaner from catching upon the opposite end of a iiue when drawing back the cleaner after a throughthrust. The intermediate portion of the rod is provided with a flat coil, B, whose center is the axis of the rod and whose plane is perpendicular thereto. Squares of cloth, C, are
centered with the coil on each side thereof,
(Model.)
and secured together and to the coil by sewing through and through, as seen at D. After attaching the cleaning material to the coil, the conical nut is screwed on, one washer placed 45 against it, the cleaning material added, and the other Washer and nut applied.
The squares of cleaning material may be of cloth, rubber, or leather, but preferably of cloth for most purposes, as in cleaning lainp- 53 chimneys and the like; but in cleaning boilerdues it is sometimes expedient to piace a piece of rubber between the squares of cloth, as seen at H, which aids to stiffen the cleaner. The coil may even be used in cleaning dues 55 without any sort of cleaning material attached thereto, in which case the coil would be made to correspond in diameter with the dues and would rub from the sides of said lues the accumulated soot and aslies, which could then be Co brushed out by a cloth cleaner.
By means of the extension-sections the same cleaner may be used for fines of various lengths.
Having thus fully described my invention,
I claim- 6 5 1. A fine-cleaner consisting of a rod provided With a dat coil and having a securer at the end, consisting of a conical nut, tivo washers, and an ordi nary nut, and squares of cloth attached at the sides of said fiat coil and 7o others secured between the Washers.
2. The combination, with a flue-cleaner rod provided with a securer, of a piece of rubber Vitnesses:
