UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES J. BAILEY, OF NEW'TON, MASSACHUSETTS.
SWAB OR CLEANER FOR GUNS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 405,297, dated June 18, 1889.
Application filed December 4, 1888. Serial No. 292,627. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES J. BAILEY, of Newton, county of Middlesex, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Swabs or Cleaners for Fire-Arms, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention has for its obj eet to construct a swab or cleaner for lire-arms which operates to effectually clean the barrel, and which may be itself readily cleaned.
The swab or cleaner embodying this invention consists of a body, preferably of rubber, made hollow to receive any suitable rod or support, to which it may be secured in any suitable manner. The body is herein shown as made cylindrical and as having a round or hemispherical end. Teeth are formed integral with the body, extending outwardly therefrom each at substantially right angles. The teeth are herein shown as cylindrical and as having blunt or fiat surfaced ends to present large frictional or cleaning surfaces.
Figure 1 shows in side elevation a swab or cleaner embodying this invention; Fig. 2, a horizontal section of the swab or cleaner shown in Fig. 1, taken 011 the dotted line 0c 50.
The swab or cleaner comprises a body a, of rubber, made cylindrical or of other suitable shape in cross-section, and preferably having a hemispherical end. The body is made hollow to form a socket to receive a rod 1) or other suitable support. As a means of fastening the body to the rod or support, I have herein shown two inwardly projecting shoulders formed within the socket, one at each side, as best shown in dotted lines, Fig. 1, and have shown the rod or support as cut away at each side to receive these shoulders, so that as the body is drawn onto the rod or support the said shoulders enter the recesses in the rod. Any other means may be provided for securing the rod in position than that herein shown. The body has formed upon it exteriorly many teeth 0, they being preferably formed integral with the body, and each extends therefrom at right angles, or nearly so. The teeth are of soft rubber, and therefore yielding, and as herein shown are made cylindrical and have blunt or (lat surfaced ends which present a large frictional or cleaning surface to contact with the inner wall of the barrel of the firearm.
The swab or cleaner herein described is very effectual in cleaning the barrel of the fire-arm, and is also very easily cleansed and does not rapidly deteriorate. By the elastic or spring-like action of the teeth they assist in shaking any material from them which may adhere thereto.
I claim 1. The swab or cleaner for fire-arms herein described, composed of the cylindrical body of rubber or like material having a series of eXteriorly-arranged teeth integral therewith, as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The swab or cleaner for fire-arms herein described, composed of the socketed or hollow cylindrical body a, of rubber or like material, having formed within its socket shoulders, and a series of exteriorly-arranged teeth integral with said body a, as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHARLES J. BAILEY.
