SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 232,118, dated September 14, 1880. Application filed July15, 1880. {no model.)

FEL'rnoU- SEN, of Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements on a Flue-Brush; and I do hereby declare that the following description of my said invention, taken in connection with the accompanying sheet of drawings, forms a full, clear, and exact specification, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the.
same.
This invention has general reference to fluebrushes 5 and it consists, essentially, in the novel combination of parts and details of construction, as hereinafter first fully set forth and described, and then pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, already referred to, which serve to, illustrate my said invention more fully, Figure l is a side elevation of my improved flue-brush. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional elevation in line or m of Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is an end view. Fig. at is a transverse sectional elevation in line y y of Fig. 3; and Fig. 5 is an end view of the sliding collar.
Like parts are designated by corresponding letters of reference in all the figures.
The object of my present invention is the production of an adjustable or expansible fluebrush for cleaning boiler-fines and tubes, by means of which several sizes of ilues may be cleaned by simply revolving the brush-handle to expand or contract the brush.
To attain this end I construct my flue-brush substantially as follows:
A in the drawings represents a cylindrical rod or spindle having on both its ends screwthreads B B, one of which is a right and the other a left thread.
To the screw-threaded end B, I secure a socket, G, into which is fitted a tubular or other rod, 1), of suitable length, by means of which the flue-brush is operated. This socket has a straight face, 0, at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the instrument.
0n the screw-threaded end B of said spindle A is fixed, by means of a screwthread and a lock-nut, E, a collar, F, having a straight face, F, parallel with the face 0 of the socket 0.
Upon the screw-threaded parts B B are fitted two collars, G G, having centrally an aperture, 9, screw-threaded internally to correspond with the threads on the spindle A. These collars have near their periphery four slot-holes, f, placed at an angle to the longitudinal axis of said spindle A, within which slot-holes are placed plates H, having both their ends H turned or bent so as to correspond to the angle of the slot-holes f in the collars G, whereby said bent parts H form inclines, as hereinafter more fully described.
On the under side of the plates H are lugs h, to which are riveted or otherwise secured plates I. In the plates H are a series of apertures to receive the brush bunches or tufts J, said tufts being secured to the plates in any suitable manner by means of wire or otherwise, to prevent them from being pulled out, while the plates I prevent them from being pushed inwardly toward the spindle A.
The plates H are of a length to fit between the parallel faces of the socket G and collar F, so that when the spindle A is revolved by the hand-rod D, and thereby the collars G moved toward or away from the socket C, said plates H will move radially toward or from the said spindle, and thereby increase or decrease the size of the brush.
It will now be readily observed that by the means described I have succeeded in making a fine-brush expansible and contractible, so"
that a brush of a given size is capable of cleaning several sizes of flues by simply turning the hand-rod D in the proper direction, and that the adjustment can instantly be made.
The tuft-s J may be made of any suitable material, such as wire, &c.
Having thus fully described myinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure to me by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. As an improved article of manufacture, an adjustable flue-brush having the tufts fitted into plates constructed to move radially toward and from the center of the brush, said plates having inclines engaging inclined slots in end plates, whereby by moving said plates the brush is expanded or contracted, substantially in the manner as and for the object specified.
2. A flue-brush, substantially as hereinbefore described, having the plates H, With their inclines H fitted to engage laterally-moving collars G, said plates being retained between the opposite surfaces of revolving collars F 0,
5 fixed to a spindle, A, whereby by revolving the said spindle the plates are moved radially from or toward a common center, as specified. 3. The combination, with the spindle A, having right and left screw-threads B B and 10 fixed collars F O, of the screw-threaded collars G, having oblique slots f, and the plates H,
having inclines H engaging said slots f, said plates being fitted between the parallel surfaces 0 F of the collars F O, as and for the object stated.
