CHARLES SCHICK, OF DAVENPORT, IOWA.
SEWER-CLEANER.
Application filed November 12, 1912.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES ScHIoK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Davenport in the county of Scott and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sewer- Cleaners, of which the following is a specification, reference beinghad therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to pipe or sewer cleaners and has reference to a device which is provided with double conical flexible portions which are adapted to be bent back so as to engage the sides of the pipe when the device is moved back and forth within the pipe.
Another object of this invention is the production of novel and efficient gripping means carried within one of the conical portions of the device which are adapted to engage any refuse material which may be within the pipe which is being cleaned.
With these and other objects in view this invention consists of certain novel combinations, constructions, and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings :Figure 1 is a central vertical section of the device. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section illustrating how the edge portions of the conical members are bent back when the same is in use. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the gripping member.
Referring to the accompanying drawing by numerals it will be seen that the device consists of an enlarged hardened body 1 which is provided with the threaded portion 2. Formed adjacent to each end of the body 1 are the conical flexible members 3 which are formed of rubber, the outer edge 4 of said last mentioned members adapted to be bent back and adhere to the side of the pipe as illustrated in Fig. 2 when the device is moved back and forth within the pipe.
In order to operate the device there is pro- 7 vided a hollow handle portion or hose 5 which is provided with the threaded member 6 which is threaded into the body 1.
In order to grip any refuse which may be Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 17, 1913.
Serial No. 730,942.
within the pipe there is provided a gripping means which comprises a cylindrical threaded member 7 adjacent which are formed the arms 8. Near the outer end of the arms 8 there is formed a hook 9 which is struck from the arms while the outer end of the arm 8 terminates in a pointed portion 10. By use of this device a pipe may be easily and efficiently cleaned by inserting the same in the desired section. When the device is rammed within the pipe the gripping fingers 8 will pierce any refuse material and will securely hold the same while the device is being withdrawn and the flexible conical members at the same time will efficiently clean and scour the inner portion of the pipe. In order to allow the pipe to be flushed while the same is being cleaned the hollow handle 5 and the hollow cylindrical member 7 will allow the passage of water to produce this desired effect.
It will be seen by referring to the above description, that a simple and efiicient cleaner has been produced which will efficiently scour the inner face of the pipe, and which is also provided with means for gripping the larger refuse in the pipe for removing the same as the conical members scour the interior thereof.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new, is
In a device of the class described the combination with a plurality of conical rubber members provided with a connecting body, a gripping member comprising a cylindrical threaded member engaging said body, oppositely disposed arms carried by said threaded member, hooks struck from said arms and bent inwardly, one of said arms constituting a protector for the other of said arms, said arms positioned within one of said conical members and means for reciproeating said cleaner.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
CHARLES SCHICK.
