Description

(NoModeL) G. M. BEARD. Clutch for Bow-Strings. N50. 228,302. Patemed une 1,5880;
INVENTORI: G m fi a/wa WITNESSES 2 MPEYHS, PHOTU-LLTHOGRAPHER, WASHINGTON, o C.
lJNiTE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES M. BEARD, OF ELROY, WISCONSIN.
CLUTCH FOR BOW-STRINGS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 228,302, dated June 1, 1880.
Application filed March 6, 1880.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES M. BEARD, of Elroy, in the county of Juneau and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and Improved Arrow-Holder, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved arrow-holder which holds the arrow while the bow is being drawn and releases it by means of a trigger, thus permitting the bow-string to force the said arrow forward.
The invention consists of a portable clutch for seizing a bow-string, which is adapted to be held in the hand, and is provided with an unlatching device or trigger, by means of which the bow-string, when strained to the desired point, may be instantaneously released without any relaxation of the muscles of the archers arm.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of myimproved arrow-holder. Fig. 2 is a partial cross-sectional and front elevation of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The lever A, provided with a curved handle, B, is provided with a longitudinal slot, in which the trigger-wheel O, proy'ided with two or more rounded arms, I) b, is pivoted.
A straight lever, D, is pivoted on the upper side of the lever A, and has the under side of its rear end, E, slightly recessed on a curved line. At the end of this curved under side a small notch, F, is out into the same, and next to this notch a recess, G, is provided on the under side of the said lever.
The front ends of the levers A and D are provided with cushions H, preferably made of rubber or some other similar material, and provided with a longitudinal groove in the adjoining sides, so as to obtain a better gripe on the end of the arrow.
The operation is as follows: The arrow, which is preferably a little thicker at the rear end, is placed between the cushions H H, the
(N0 model.)
string of the bow having been previously placed into the groove on the end of the arrow. By rotating the trigger-Wheel O in the direction of the arrow at the rounded end of one of the arms I) glides along the curved recessed under side of the rear end, E, of the lever D, thereby raising said rear end and pressing the front downward, and thus holding the arrow firmly. The end of the arm I) then passes into the notch F and locks the lever D in the above-described position. The bow-string is then drawn by pulling on the handle B, and as soon as aim has been taken the trigger is slightly touched, so as to cause the end of the arm I) to pass out of the notch F into the recess G, thereby releasing the lever D, and consequently, also, the arrow and the bow-string, which is drawn forward with great force by the bow and forces the arrow forward with great speed.
With the herein-described apparatus the arrow can be firmly held while drawing the how, the string can be drawn with great ease, and very accurate aim can be taken.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination of the bent piece A B, the straight lever D, having notch F and recess G, and the trigger b, as and for the purpose specified.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a handclutch for straining a bow-string, provided with an unlocking device, by the operation of which the bow-string may be instantaneously set free, substantially as set forth.
3. In a hand-clutch for drawing a bow-strin g, the combination of a hook or angular projection to hold the string while being drawn and a trigger to discharge the string when it is drawn, as specified.
CHARLES MINOR BEARD.
