Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL F. ROBINSON, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO.
HUMMING TOY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 337,871, dated March 16, 1886.
Application filed May 8, 1885. Serial No. 164,837.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL F. ROBINSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Humming Toys; and I do declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of my invention, which will enable others skilled in the art or science to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in humming toys, in which a thin rectangular piece of wood or other material is connected by means of a cord, wire, or chain with a handle, and by the rapid rotation of the thin rectangular piece of wood or other material around the handle producing a humming or musical note for the amusement of children.
The object of my invention is to provide a thin rectangular piece of wood or other material, slightly wedge-shaped, with a swivel at the thick end attached by a cord, wire, or chain to another swivel on the end of a wooden handle, to facilitate the rotary motion which produces the humming or musical note. I accomplish this object by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a thin rectangular piece of wood or other material. Fig. 2 is the handle. Fig. 3 is an end view of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 is a sectional view of Fig. 1, showing, the wedge shape. Figs. 1 and 2, connected by the cord, wire, or chain E, show the complete toy.
(No model.)
Similar letters refer to similar parts th roughout the several views.
The thin rectangular piece of wood or other material A, connected with the cord, wire, or chain E, by means of the swivels F G, and also connected with the handle B, constitutes the complete toy. G isa piece of sheet metal turned over the ends of A and B and fastened to them by rivets D or other suitable means. The wire pin, F, has a head, H, and passes through G, fitting loosely so as to turn easily, thus forming a swivel. The end of the pin F has a loop, K, to which the cord, wire, or chain is attached.
I am aware that a flat piece of wood attached to a handle by means ofa cord has been used for a humming toy. I therefore do not claim such a combination, broadly; but
hat I do claim as my invention, and desire to patent, is
1. The combination, in a humming toy, of a swivel, G F, with a thin rectangular piece of wood or other material, A, with the cord, wire, or chain E and the handle B, all substantially as set forth.
2. The wedge-shaped thin rectangular piece of wood or other material A, in combination with the swivels G F, the cord, wire, or chain E, and the handle B, substantially as set forth, and for the purpose specified.
SAMUEL F. ROBINSON.
