Description
(ModeL) T. CANDY.
TOY BOX.
Patented Sept. 20,1881.
UNITED STATES PATENT, OFFICE.
THOMAS CANDY, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
TOY Box.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 247,302, dated September 20, 1881,
Application filed August 1,1881. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, THOMAS CANDY, of Cincinnati, Hamilton county, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Toy Box, of which the following is a specification.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention in its most complete form, in which my device is shown in four sections. Fig. 2 is a partly-sectional elevation of the same in three sections. Figs. 3, 4, and 5 represent modifications.
A B C D represent a series of pasteboard or other boxes, preferably of square or other polygonal form, which boxes are permanently pivoted or strung together at their middles by any suitable fastening, preferably an elastic cord or thong, E. One or more of these boxes or sections may have orifices F, which are closed by lids Gr, through which the thong E is passed and knotted or otherwise secured on the outer side.
The exposed faces of the sections may be decorated with fragmentary pictures, as shown, capable of creating amusement by transposition of one or more sections by rotation about the central thong or pivot.
Instead of, or in association with, a thong, the consecutive sections may be riveted or eyeleted, as shown in Fig. 4. Associated with this last mode of attachment may be one or more lids, secured by a thong passed through the eyelet and the said lids, as shown in this figure.
The thong and self-closing lid may be used in association with a single box, as in Fig. 5.
The boxes may be square, as shown, or octagonal, or circular, or any polygonal trans verse section.
I claim as new and of my invention- 1. A box provided with elastic thongE and self-closing lid G, substantially as set forth.
2. A series of boxes with pictured walls or facets, and permanently united by a central thong or pivot, about which they may be separately rotated, substantially as set forth.
3. A series of boxes with pictured walls or facets and permanently united by a central extensible elastic thong, which permits of their rotation and of their partial separation, substantially as set forth.
4. One or more permanently connected boxes capable of rotation relatively to one another, and having one or more orifices,-whose 'lids are retained and made self-closing by means of an extensibly-elastic thong, which is attached to the center of the lid and constitutes its sole fastening, substantially as set forth.
In testimony of which invention I hereunto set my hand.
THOMAS CANDY.
