TOY.
SPECIFICATIQN formi part of Letters Patent No. 328,398, dated October 13, 1885.
Application filed May 31, 1884. Slrial No. 133,2 5. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, AUGUSTUS M. FREE- MAN, of Ocean Grove, in the county of Monmouth and State of New Jersey, haveinvented 5 an Improvement in Toys, of which the following is a specification.
This toy is designated by me as a sandmill. The same is intended for the amusement of children, especially at the seashore.
The sand is supplied into a hopper and runs through an imitation mill and comes out at a spout at the bottom. mill the weight of the sand is employed to turn a wheel within the case and to revolve 1 wheels and cranks that give motion to bars and toy figures, thus affording amusement to children and a diversion and recreation by giving something to do in supplying sand into the hopper and removing the material that runs through the mill.
Inthe drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical section of the toy, and Fig. 2 is an end elevation.
The toy is made with a case having sides a a b and legs 0 0, preferably made of sheet 2 metal. There is a removable side, d, that may be drawn vertically out from between the two sides a a and used as a shovel for the sand. Between the sides and within the case there is a vertical wheel, f, with buckets upon 0 it, and the shaft extends through the sides a a and terminates as cranks g and fly-wheels h h. Below the wheel f there is an inclined partition, a, leading to an opening in the side 12, where there is a spout, 0, and above the 3 5 wheel, and resting upon the case a b, there is a hopper, k, the central discharge or pipe, 'i,
In running through the of which is over the wheel, and sufficiently at one side to cause the wheel to revolve by the weight of the sand running into it.
The revolutions of the bucket-wheel and the 40 fly-wheels give the appearance of a mill, and the sand running in through the hopper and out by the spout 0 appears the same as if something had been ground in the mill.
Dhe cranks g are used to give motion to bars Z, that slide through loops or guides 11, and at the upper ends there may be toy figures-monkeys or other animals-.which are moved up and down and swung by the action of the cranks.
I do not claim a closed box or case having upon the top or within it a hopper and a wheel to be revolved by the sand as it runs from the hopper, as this has been used, but the sand remained within the case or was received into a drawer.
I claim as my invention- The toy composed of the vertical wheel f, with buckets, the horizontal shaft for the same, the fiy-wheels h,upon the outer ends of the shaft, the case a a b, and legs 0, and movable side d, the inclined partition u, and the spout 0, outside the case, and the hopper 7c, having a central discharge-pipe, 2', above the buckets of the wheel, substantially as set 6 5 forth.
Signed by me this 27th day of May, A. D. 1884.
AUGUSTUS M. FREEMAN.
