TOY.
Application fi1ed February '7, 1921.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM L. DE HAVEN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of lVichita, in the county of Sedgwick and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a mechanical driven toy, that can be operated in a simple manner, and can be handled ordinarily without destruction to the mechanism, same being housed except the crank by which it is operated.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple devicefor amusement, and one that can be handled and operated by children.
My invention consists further of certain details of construction and arrangement of parts as"hereinafter described, and claimed.
Referring to the drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of the toy with parts broken away for convenience of. illustration.
Fig. 2 is a vertical section. A is the box arranged to house the mechanism. B is the trunk of the puppet. C is a crank shaft. D is a belt. E is a roller or pulley mounted on crank shaft F. Gr is a partition. II is a transparent front of the container. The partition G is partly broken away as shown at I in Fig. 1. b is the head of the puppet. b b 6 and Z2 are the arms. b, Z2, Z1 and Z2 are the legs.
Crank shaft C is journaled in the back and partition at the upper end of the container and said shaft is adapted to rotate in said bearings as shown at 0 said shaft having a crank the end' of which is pivotally connected to the head of the puppet as shown at 0 Crank shaft F is journaled in the sides of the container at the lower end being trans verse to shaft C, said shaft being adapted to revolve and by means of the belt D shaft 0 is actuated and the crank of said shaft being attached to the puppet as shown will cause said puppet to oscillate throwing its arms and legs in various directions typifying a dancing posture with the feet striking the floor of the container at times.
It will be readily seen that the shoulder, elbow, hip and knee joints are pivotally connected, making the joints free to move with various gestures during the oscillating motion, which is created by the revolutions of shaft F as heretofore described.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 20, 1921.
Serial No. 443,287.
The puppet is held in position, being suspended from the crank on crank shaft C as heretofore described, and is further protected by a glass or other transparent covermg, as shown at H, therefore the toy may be tumbled about without serious danger or destruction.
I do not confine myself to making my toy of any particular kind of material, as the case may be made of wood, metal, paste board or other materials, as may also the puppet. The belt may be made of rubber, cloth or leather. 7
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a toy, the combination of an upright box having a transparent front and an upright partition spaced behind said front; a horizontal shaft journaled in the walls of the lower part of the box, an exterior hand-crank for rotating said shaft, a pulley on said shaft within the box, a rotary shaft journaled in thewalls of the upper portion of the box and extending at right angles to the aforesaid shaft, a drive belt passing around the upper shaft and said pulley, a crank on the upper shaft between said partition and the transparent front, and an articulated puppet comprising a head, trunk and limbs, the head being freely suspended from the crank on said upper shaft.
2. In a toy, the combination of a box, a horizontal shaft journaled in the end walls of the lower part of the box, an exterior hand-crank for rotating said shaft, a pulley on said shaft within the box, a rotary shaft journaled in the other two walls and extending at right angles to the aforesaid shaft, in the upper portion of the box, a drive-belt passing around the last mentioned shaft and said pulley, a crank-pin on the driven shaft, and an articulated puppet comprising a head, a body, articulated legs and arms, the head being freely suspended from said crank-pin, and the feet of the puppet touching the floor of the box when said crank-pin is at its lowest position.
WILLIAM L. DE HAVEN.
