B. M. MURPHY.
SOUNDING TOY.
No. 465,066. Patented Dec. 15,1891.
W/TNESSE$ A, N V TOR A WORN/5 y UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DONALD MURRAY MURPHY, OF ST. JOHN, CANADA.
SOUNDING TOY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 465,066, dated December 15, 1891.
Application filed September 8, 1891. Serial No. 405,090. (No model.) i I T0 at whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DONALD MURRAY IIIEJR; PHY, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residingat St. J0hn,in the county of St. John and Province of New Brunswick, Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sounding Toys, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates, generally, to toys, and more particularly to an improved sounding toy in the nature of a rattle, the object of the invention being to provide a toy of this character for the amusement of children that shall be cheap, simple, and easy to manufacture.
With this object in view my invention consists in the peculiar details of construction and novelties of combination, all of which will be more fully described hereinafter, and designated in the appended claim.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective View showing the manner of operating my improved toy. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal'section of the toy, and Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the same.
In the practical embodiment of my invention I employ rod A, which may be of any preferred length and of any shape in crosssection; but I prefer to make it round in crosssection and of such length that it may be held between the thumb and the little finger of the hand. Upon the rod A is loosely mounted a series of disks B, said disks having a central aperture 1) and moving freely back and forth upon the rod, and they may also revolve thereupon when the rod is circular in cross-section, which it generally is. The disks are also preferably circular in cross-section and are formed With fiat faces, whereby as they move back and forthupon the rod they will produce a clapping or rattling sound as they contact witheach other.
the faces of the disks, While the outer portion of the said end pieces are'shaped to produce handles, as clearly shown. The end pieces may be given any desired shape for the purpose of ornament, the inner faces being left flat in order to increase the sounds as the disks contact with each other and the faces of the end pieces.
The usual method of operating my device is to hold it as in the drawings and then gently vibrate the hand, causing the disks to move longitudinally upon the rod, contacting with each other and the end pieces, thereby producing the sounds desired.
\Vhat I claim by my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
An improved sounding toy comprising a rod or barof suitable length, the handles rigidly secured to said rod at each end of the same, the inner faces of said handles being flat, and a plurality of flat-faced disks loosely mounted upon the rod or bar between the handles and capable of a longitudinal movement upon said rod, whereby when the device is held in the hand and vibrated the disks will intermittently contact with each other and with the handle-faces by which to produce clapping sounds, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my sig nature in presence of two witnesses.
his DONALD MURRAY MURPHY.
