Description
"UNITED STATES:
PATENT FFrcE.
MATTHEW DUFFNER, OF ALLEGHENY, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- SIXTI-I TO 0. -C. WILLIAMS, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
EXERCISER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 714,463, dated November 25, 1902. Application filed April 5, 1902. Serial No. 101,538. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MATTHEW DUFFNER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Allegheny, in the county of Allegheny 5. and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Exercisers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing. a
, I This inventionrelates to certain new and t usefulimprovemenis inexercisers, and relates more particularly to infants exercisers. The present invention contemplates to provide an exerciser thatwill comprise both an I exerciser and toy, the latter affording great' amusement to children and producing a noise and musical sounds as the same is operated. Another object of the present invention is to produce an exerciser that will be extremely .1 tion, combination, and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawing, 3o forming a part of this specification, Wherein like numerals of reference indicate like parts, and in which the drawing is a view in side elevation of my improved exerciser, the
I sleeve thereof being in longitudinal section. In the drawing the reference-numeral 1 represents a dumb-bell the knobs of which are formed of two hollow semicylindrical sections which preferably carry flanges for the purpose of securing the same together. A hol- 1 o low sleeve 2 is placed over the handle of the dumb'belhsaidhollowsleevehavingopenings formed therein through Which extends the operating-cord 4, which is Wound, as shown at 5, upon the handle of the dumb-bell 1, and
a ball or button 6 is secured to the free end of the operating-cord 4. This sleeve 2 may carry extensions 7, in which are secured springs 8, the latter passing over the corrugated inner section 9 of the knob. The outer section of this knob has formed therein at its outer end a number of openings 10. In lieu of the corrugations 9 upon the opposite knob of the dumb-bell I employ a series of springteeth 9, arranged on the inner section thereof and which may be of various lengths to produce musical sounds as the spring 8 engages the same.
The operation of my improved exerciser is as follows: The sleeve 2 is taken in one hand, and with the other hand the operating-cord is pulled, thereby rotating the dumb-bell and again windingupthecord. Asthedumlb-bells are rotated the springs S, engaging in the corrugations 9, and the springs 9 will produce sounds and musical notes that are desirable in toys of this class. By means of the openings 10, formed in the hollow dumb-bells, a whistling sound may also be produced in case the dumb-bells are rapidly rotated.
It will be noted that various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In an exerciser, the combination of a dumb-bell having one of its knobs formed with corrugations, a sleeve inclosing the handle of said dumb-bell, an operating-cord, an exten- 8o sion formed on one of the ends of said sleeve,
a spring secured in said extension and adapted to engage said corrugations to produce sounds as the dumb-bell is rotated, substantially as described.
2. In an exerciser, the combination of a dumb-bell having hollow knobs formed in sections, one of said knobs having its inner section corrugated, a sleeve inclosing the handle of said dumb-bell, an operating-cord and 0 a spring carried by said sleeve to engage the said corrugations to produce sounds as the dumb-bell is rotated, substantially as described.
3. The combination of a dumb-bell, the knobs of which are formed in two sections, the inner section of one of said knobs being corrugated, and its outer section apertured, said other knob having its inner section provided with spring-teeth, a sleeve inclosing the zoo handle of said dumb-bell, an operating-cord, springs secured to said sleeve, and engaging (1 umb-bell, havin g sectional knobs with one of the sections corrugated, of a sleeve inclosing the handle of the dumb-bell, an operatingcord, and springs secured to the opposite ends of the sleeve, said springs having their free ends in engagement with the said corrugated sections of the knobs.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
