UNITED STATES PATET FFIC.
ELIJAH C. BARTON, OF EAST HAMPTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO GONG-BELL MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN- BELL TOYS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 186,705, dated January 30, 1877 application filed August 12, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELIJAH G. BARTON, of East Hampton, in the county of Middlesex and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Revolving Bell Toys; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specification.
This invention relates to that class of tractable bell toys for which I heretofore secured United States Letters Patent, May 19, 1874, and which were reissued, September 14, 1875, numbered reissue No. 6,644 and my present invention consists in the combination, with a pair of Wheels connected by an axle, of a bell (one or more) arranged on the outside of the wheel or Wheels, in such manner that the rev? olution of the wheel or wheels, as the toy is drawn or pushed along the floor, will cause the ringing or sounding of the bell so arranged, as will be presently explained.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a partly sectional view of a tractable bell toy embodying my present improvement, the section being taken on the plane of the vertical line drawn just inside of one of the Wheels Fig. 2 is a vertical central section taken on the plane of the line as m, Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is an inside view of a bell which may be advantageously used.
A designates an axle, and B B two wheels mounted thereon, and C C two gong-bells secured to opposite ends. of said axle; and D D are gravitating clappers hung loosely upon said axle, so as to strike pins a a, projecting from the inner surface of said bells, when the pins are brought in contact therewith by the revolution of the bells.
The arrangement of the bells outside the wheels, in a double-wheeled toy, provides a free space upon the axle for the attachment of a figure, E, which, in the case of a rotating axle, such as shown, may be loosely hung upon said axle by a ring oreye and balanced by a weight, G, in a well-known manner; and it also provides for the attachment of a pair of shafts, H, and a horse,- I, or for the attachment of any other draft-animal, or of another toy.
I wish here to remark that the bells may be attached to the wheels, and said wheels and bells revolve upon a stationary axle; and I wish also to remark that any suitable construction of bell may be employed, either a clapper or jingle bell, so long as such hell or bells are arranged outside the wheels, and are caused to sound or ring by reason of the rotation of the Wheels. Of course, if desired, only one bell need be employed, and so also may more than two be employed.
In the two-wheeled example of my invention illustrated in the drawing, it is obvious that if the draft-animal I be dispensed with, the shafts could be joined together and constitute a draft-bar or a draft-bar of any other suitable construction can be employed.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, in a tractable bell toy,
with a pair of wheels, B B, connected by an axle, A, or its equivalent, of one or more bells arranged upon the outside of one or both of said wheels, substantially as herein specified.
