TAMPER FOR TOBACCO lIPES.
Application led January 3U, 1922. Serial No. 532,732.
To all whom t may concern.' r
Be it known that l, JOHN B. HOAGLAND, a citizen of the United States, and resident of the city of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tampere for 7lohacco Pipes, of which the following is a specification containing a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
My invention relates to improvements in tampers for tobacco pipes, and has for its primary object a vdevice for such purposes which may be used especially for advertising purposes for different brands of smoking tobacco.
ln the drawings- Fig. 1- is a plan view of a strip of sheet metal, stamped out and ready to be formed.
Fig. 2 a top plan view of my improved tamp when formed.
Fig. 8 an edge view of the same when partly formed.
Fig. la similar view illustrating the device before the stem is finally folded.
Fig. 5 an edge view of the completed device.
Fig. 6 a side view of the same.
Referring to the drawings- 7 indicates a strip `of sheet metal or the blank out of which my improved tamping device is formed. This blank consists of a hexagonal portion 8 which forms the head of the tampering device. 9 indicates strips which are formed integral with the head 8 and which are adapted to be folded over the head S, as illustrated in Figs. 3, il, and 5.
10 indicates the portions which are folded against the hexagonal head portion 8. After the portions l0 have been folded a ainst the hexa onal ortion 8 the remainder of the strips are folded against each other, as illustrated in Figs. 3, if, and 5, so as to form an integral stem for the tamping device.
ln Fig. 3 l have illustrated the same formed before the end of the stem is folded, in which it will he observed that one of the portions 9 is longer than the other portion so that when the end is folded over as illustrated in Fig. 4, the folded over ends of the strips will occupy the same plane or he Hush.
ln Fig. 5 l have illustrated the final folding of the end of the stein which is really a doable fold. By this final folding the ends of the strips 9 are securely united tege her, which forms on thc stem an enlargen'ient or shoulder which ias a tendency to prevent the tamping device from slipping ont of the fingers while it is being used.
in Fig. l have shown the device with the name of the tobacco thereon.
My device is preferably stamped from sheet metal, hnt of course, may be made out of other materials. "W hen formed ont of sheet metal as shown and described, the edges may be used to scrape ont the encrnstation on the inner surface of the bowl.
Having fully described my invention, what l claim is:
l. A tamping device for smoking pipes, comprising a head portion, strips formed integral with said head portion at opposite edges thereof and of less width than thc head portion, one of said strips being longer than the other, both of said strips adapted to he folded bach upon the face of the head portion to a point approximatelyT its center, the remaining portion of each strip adapted to be bent at right angles to the foloed portion and to the head portion for forming a handle, the free ends of said strips adapted to he folded npon each other for preventing the strips from separating.
2. A tainping device for smoking pipes, comprising a strip of metal having an enlarged portion formed integral therewith and to one side of its center so that the portion of the strip on one side of the enlargenient is longer than the other portion, each of said Ktrips being so hent that a portion thereof will lie close to the surface of the enla); ement anden the saine side thereof, the mainder of said port-ions extending at right angles to said enlargement and contacting with each other. the free ends of said portions being folded upon each other whereby the same are prevented from spreading and a handle is formed.
ln testimony whereof, l have signed my name to this specification.
