new and useful" Improvements in droning Boards, of which the followingzis a specification;
w I My invention-relates to ironingboards, and particularly to means for securing a cover thereon and providingan iron-rest therefor, and has for one of its objects'to.
provide such a board and such securing means which may beeasily, and cheaply made, of simple construction and convenient of manipulation, and which shall permit the iron-stand, while remaining secured to said board, to be used upon either-side of the same as desired.
The invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of various elements and parts, as hereinafter set forth in the claim hereof, certain embodiments of the same being shown in the accompanying drawings and fully described in this specification. v
In the accompanying drawings, Fig! 1 is a perspective view of an ironing board provided with a cover and showing the same secured by a device constructed according to my invention and showing also an iron-stand attached thereto, a portion of the cover being broken away; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section along the line 22 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a view on an enlarged scale of a part of the cover-securing device; and Fig.
4 is a view of a modified form hereinafter more particularly described.
In carrying my invention into effect in the embodiments thereof which I have selected for description in this specification and illustration in the accompanying drawings, I provide an ironing board'of the usual or any suitable size and shape, the same being desig- 'nated by the'reference numeral 5, and in the end thereof I provide a kerf or groove 6.
The board may be provided on one or both sides with a soft layer of material or cushion of approximately the same size and shape,
shown at 7 in the drawings, and overall is slipped a cover 8. Ironing boards are usually somewhat smaller at one end than at the other, andthe outer cover which is intended I to be slipped over the board is of a corresponding shape, and open at. {one end .in. 1a manner-which is well understood, and my invention contemplates thepreferred use offa with 1 flaps atits open. end longenough-to permit of the. same being turned backwards and inwardsand inserted :into the grooved.
board and coverofsuch.shapepand mutual adaptation; the cover 3 is,.-however, provided A 1 preferred form 1-of, securing means is I shown at 9 in Fig.1 1, and a portion of the same on an JenIargedLscale inFig; This device as shown in the drawings -is forme'd 1 of a w1re,:or strip-of metal, large. enough I when: insertedin the groovev 6-tob1ndthere1n and to hold the inturned flaps of the cover securely in place. The wire 9 is preferably bent into an undulating shape as shown best in Fig. 3, two of the upwardly extending loops, however, designated 10, being squared and extending outward beyond the others when the wire is inserted into the groove 6.
Devices for securing the iron-stand to the board are shown in Figs. 1 and 2 anddesignated 11. of loops of sheet metal, but may of course be composed simply of wire. They are placed upon the squared loops 10 or" the securing device and are of approximately sufficient length to extend from the middle of the board to somewhat beyond either of the side surfaces, as shown in Fig. 1, and the" outer ends of these loops serve for the reception of the ends of an iron-rest 12, which, as is shown in Figs..1 and 2, is formed of a wire or strip of suitable material bent into an undulating form and adapted to receive an iron when not in use.
In Fig. 4. I show a modification of my invention which comprises a cap 18 which is adapted to be placed over theend of the board after the cover has been placed upon the same, the edges inturned, and a securing device such as 9 inserted. This cap 13 may be used in case it is desired not to have the open groove in the end of the board disclosed to sight. To the cap 13 are attached a pair of staples 142, which are adapted to hold loops 11 in the same manner as does the securing device 9, to which loops 'an iron-rest 12 may be securedv as already referred to and as indicated in Figs. and '2 of the drawings.
The operation or method of use of my invention will be obvious from the drawings These devices consist, as shown,
' the ironing board and secured thereto in and from What has been above said with regard to the construction ofthe device.
The advantages of my invention will be obvious. I might particularly mention the ease with which acover may be placed upon perfect smoothness, and if any Wrinkle should appear in the cover, it is easy to. loosen the securing device 9, smooth out the wrinkle, and resecure the cover. No tacks or slmllar devlces are necessary, owing to the close fitting ofithe cover to the board as has been pointed out, the securing device tightening the cover in a manner analogous to the tightening of a drum-head. By using the above described iron-rest and securing "1 the same to the board, there .is no dangerof losing the rest, and the same is always at hand foruse when desired, and yet, as Will be evident, the rest can be used with equal facility on either side of the board. If it is desired, however, to remove the rest from theboard, this can easily be done by slip;-
ping the ends of the same out'from the loops 11, as will be readily seen from Fig. 1.
using a securing device of the form shown in Fig. 3 ofthe drawings, I may employ any equivalent means adequate for the required; purpose.
Having thus. described my invention,
what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentis as follows:- V V The combination with an ironing board provided with a slot in the edge thereof, and
a cover adapted to be placed over, saidboard having a portion thereof projecting'beyQDd the edge of the board and adapted to be inserted in said slot, of a securing device adapted to be placed in said slot and'to' see cure therein a portion of said cover, an ironrest, and devices adapted to swingingly' connectsaid. iron-rest to sa d securmg device;
