This invention relates to a holder for smoothing irons, one of the objects being to provide a device of this character which, when in position, will support the smoothin iron beyond the end of the board where it will not interfere with the fabric to be ironed on the board or contact with said f abric or with the cover of the board.

Another object is to provide a holder so shaped as to support the iron at the same level with the topof the ironing board.

A still further object i to provide a support which will not interfere with the proper placing of the cover and padding on the board, nor interfere with the supporting legs usually provided for ironing boards.

A still further object is to provide a simple but efficient means for joining the support to the ironing board.

With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts, hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims, it being understood that changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed.

In the accompanying drawing the preferred form of the invention has been shown.

Figure 1 is a top plan view of one end portion of an ironing board and of the iron holder attached thereto.

Figure 4 is a section showing a modified connection between the holder and the board.

Referring to the figures by characters of reference, I designates the main frame of the holder which preferably is formed of still, heavy wire bent to provide a transverse end member 2, parallel side members 3 and short inturned members 4. A plate 5 is located under the members I and 2 and has marginal portions 6 on three sides thereof which are bent upwardly over and partly around the

2 and 3 so as to hold the plate assembled with the frame. An upturned flange is carried by the plate 5 as indicated at 1 and is parallel with member 2 but located adjacent to the members 4. This flange, the

2 and 3 and the inturned portions 6 cooperate to provide a tray-like structure sufiicient- 1y large to receive the smoothin surface of an iron to be supported.

The inturned members 4 of the frame merge into the long arms 8 of connecting hangers which are substantially U-shaped, each of these hangers including a bottom portion 9 and an upwardly extended short arm 10. Each short arm, in turn, merges into a straight end extension I i. The extensions on the two hangers are preferably parallel as shown particularly in Figures 1 and 2 and, as shown in Figure 3, the U-shaped hangers are so proportioned that when the holder is joined to an ironing board B the tray-like portion including the plate 5 will be supported substantially level with the top of the board but spaced therefrom.

For the purpose of attachin the holder to an ironing board B there are provided holding plates 12 each of which has a channel l3 proportioned to receive one of the extensions ll. As shown in Figure 3, the channel I3 in the plate may be provided with a bottom opening l4 through which one of the short arms Hi can be extended, thereby preventing withdrawal of the extensions I I from the plates l2 as long as said plates are secured to the bottom of the board B as shown.

Should it be desired to make the holder detachable, however, attaching plates I5 having a channeled portion l6 with open ends could be used so that the extensions ll thus could be moved freely into or out of the plates. This modified arrangement has been shown in Figure 4.

In practice the plates are attached to the bottom of the board after the extensions II have been placed therein. By having the inturned portions 4, the yokes and their extensions II will be located where they will not interfere with the folding legs 01 other supports commonly provided on ironing boards. By having yokes for connecting the tray to the board it is possible for the ironing board cover C to extend around the end edge of the board beyond which the holder is supported. See Figure 3. Furthermore by mounting the holder as stated the plate 5 on which the smoothing iron is to be placed will be located well removed from the cover on the board so that there is no danger of the cover or the fabric resting thereon becoming scorched or ignited by a hot iron on the holder.

What is claimed is:

1. As an article of manufacture attachable to an ironing board, a holder for smoothing irons, comprising a frame, formed from a single length of material and including a transverse frame member, side frame members, inturned short frame members, all of said members being in the same plane, yokes dependent from the short frame members, and extensions on the yokes, an ironsupporting plate carried by the frame, the plate having edge portions inturned for clamping engagement with the transverse frame member and side frame members, and attaching plates connectable to the ironing board, the attaching plates having channels and bottom openings communicating therewith,,the-extensions being extended through the channels, and portions of the yokes being extended through the bottom openings.

As an article of manufacture attachable to an ironing board, a holder for smoothing irons, comprising a frame, formed from a single length of material and including a transverse framemember spaced from the end'of'the ironing board in parallel relation thereto, paralle1 side frame members extended from the ends of the transverse frame member at .a right angle to said member, short frame members each-inturnedz-from one end of one of the side fram -members at a, right angle. thereto; all of said members being in the same plane, U-shaped yokes dependent from the shortframe members,.and straight extensions on the yokes, the extensions being in a plane parallel 4 to the aforesaid plane, an iron-supporting plate carried by the frame, the plate having edge portions inturned for clamping engagement with the transverse frame member and side frame members, and attaching plates connectable to the ironing board, the attaching plates having channesl and bottom openings communicating therewith, the extensions being extended through the channels, and portions of the yokes being extended through .the bottom openings.
