United States Patent 3,245,161 I IRDNING BOARDTAiBLE AND COVER THEREFOR Joseph G. Adiletta, Riverside, and Theodore Descovich, Springtiale, C0nn., assignors, by mesue assignments, to ,Iall- (iorporation, Glen (Cove, N-.Y.-, a corporation of New York' 7 Filed Oct. 29, 1962, Ser- No. 233,572 4 Claims. (Cl. 38-404) This invention relates to ironing tables and more specifically to improved ironing tableconstruction and to covers therefor.
It is a primary object of the invention to provide an ironing table or board of improved configuration in which a single ironing sur'face incorporates a bifurcated portion upon which sleevesand' other tubular garments or articles may be ironed as well as providing an ironing surface for general purpose ironing.
It is still a further object of the invention to provide a novel convertible ironing table in which the ironing surface contains as an integral part thereof a bifurcated sleeve portion and which is provided with a cover allowing use of the ironing table as a general utility table either when the ironing surface is not in use or in addition thereto.
Additional objects and advantages provided by the invention will become apparent from the following description of the invention taken in conjunction with the various figures of the drawing in which:
FIG. 1 illustrates in perspective an alternate embodiment wherein the ironing table comprises a fully detachable cover which contains foldable legs and is useful as a separable utility table.
FIG. 2 is a side view of the table of FIG. 1.
FIG. 3 illustrates in perspective an ironing table similar to that of FIG. 1 wherein the cover for the ironing table is hinged and provides an auxiliary receptacle for articles when in the open position.
FIG. 4 is a view taken substantially along line 11--11 of FIG. 3.
FIG. 5 is a perspective view of still a further embodiment in which one side of the cover may be adapted to form an extension of the ironing surface using one of the pairs of foldable legs only or the cover may be used as a separate table as that of FIG. 5.
FIG. 6 is a side view of the table of FIG. 12 with the cover attached contiguous to the ironing table.
The invention essentially provides an improved structure in the ironing table art which offers the optimum in utility, service life, and convenience. It has heretofore been the practice in connection with ironing tables to use a separate board to iron tubular articles such as sleeves. This has necessitated the need for a separate board. A separate board is cumbersome; its presence together with various other items, including the main board itself, the iron and the article being ironed result in congestion in the vicinity where ironing is taking place, and frequently is the occasion for accidents. By combining a pair of relatively narrow ironing surfaces formed integrally with the main ironing surface, a novel and useful and highly advantageous result is obtained.
The invention further advantageously provides an ironing table with a cover comprising a feature of convertability, i.e. the cover, when not in use as such, affords a table for general utility and may be either attached to, or detached from, as a separate unit, the ironing table proper.
The arrangement shown in FIGS. 1 and 2 comprises an ironing table which includes a base surface 40 supported by legs 41. Spacers 42 running transversely on surface 40 support the ironing surface 44. The surface 3,245,161 Patented Apr. 12, 1966 ICE 44 and the padding and cover thereon comprise a bifur cated portion running a minor length of the ironing surface and a broad portion of major length for general ironing. Suitably disposed within the spacers 42 may be positioned a drawer 43 in which articles such as scissors, thread, etc., may be conveniently contained;
The ironing surface 34 is equipped with a cover 45 in which contained therein is a plurality of foldable legs 46. When the ironing table is in use, the cover is removed and may be utilized as a separate table apart from the ironing unit. When the ironing table is not in use, the legs 46 within the cover are folded and the combination of cover on the ironing surface provides an attractive utility table in itself an attractive piece of furniture as distinguished from the relatively unsightly appearance of exposed ironing surfaces. The space 48 between the bifurcated portions 49 and 50 may be utilized for storage of the iron 47 when not in use. As shown, the iron 47 is inserted between arms 49 and 50 and when pushed to the base of the bifurcated portion is securely held on surface 40.
In the embodiment shown in FIGS. 3 and 4, the cover is suitably hinged at 56 to the support surface 57 supported by legs 58. The cover in its open position as illustrated provides a receptacle for large articles being ironed preventing soiling which would otherwise occur if the articles being ironed drop to the floor. As suitable support for the open cover, a fifth leg 59 is suitably hinged at 61 through the horizontal support 60. When the cover is placed over the ironing surface 62, the leg is folded to the position shown by broken lines 59.
In the embodiment illustrated in FIGS. 5 and 6, the unit comprises ironing table similar to that described in connection with FIGS. 1 and 2 with the exception that the base surface 65 is provided with an upstanding portion 66 which extends beyond and is spaced from the ironing surface 67 at the back side. The cover 68 comprising a top 69 and four depending sides 70 may now be employed in attached relationship as shown in FIG. 6 to provide an additional table contiguous to the ironing surface 67. This is effected by inserting one side 70 of the cover 68 into the space between the upstanding element 56 and the surface 57 and extending two of the legs 71 so as to be perpendicular to surface 69.
Various additional modifications may be made in the details described in connection with the description of the invention without departing from the scope of the invention. Accordingly, the invention is not to be limited except insofar as necessitated by the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. An ironing table comprising, in combination, a horizontal support surface, supporting legs secured to said surface, an ironing surface spaced in substantially parallel relationship to said support surface, ironing surface support member for supporting the ironing surface above the support surface, said ironing surface including a main ironing surface of major length, and extending in a longitudinal coplanar direction and integral therewith, a bifurcated ironing surface of minor length, the supporting means for the ironing surface being attached to the main ironing surface such that the bifurcated ironing surface is cantilevered therefrom, a substantially rigid cover enclosing said ironing surface and being supported by and forming an enclosure with said horizontal support surface in its closed position, foldable leg means for supporting the cover when in its opened position andsecond support means for supporting the cover in the opened position, supported by the ironing table, whereby when the cover is in its opened position it is supported by the foldable leg means and by the second support means in a plane substantially parallel to the ironing surface.
2. The ironing table of claim 1 in which the foldable leg means is provided in the underside of the cover and wherein the second support means comprises a vertical member forming a portion of the side of the cover and extending downwardly therefrom and adapted to rest upon the support surface of the ironing table, the vertical support member and the foldable leg means being of a sufiicient length such that when the cover is supported by the two support members it rests in a plane substantially parallel to the ironing surface.
3. The ironing table of claim 2 wherein the foldable leg means and the vertical support member are of such length that when the cover is supported by the two support members it forms a substantially contiguous surface with the ironing surface.
4. The ironing table of claim 1 in which the foldable leg means is attached to the ironing table and in which the cover is hinged to the support surface whereby the hinge forms the second support means.
