PACKING PAD.
Application flledjlay 21, 1923. Serial No. 640,406.
The well known type of packing pad consisting ofv a: tubular wrapper open at 1ts ends and containing a filling of excelsior or other compressible material is efficient only 5 for certain uses. I When used as an egg packing for positioning between the respective horizontal layers of eggs in the egg case, this present type of tubular pad, particularly illustrated in Letters Patent No. 915,094, dated March 16, 1909, is very inefficient in that it is of the crowned type and being thinner at the edges than in the center, thus not afiording a uniform support for the eggs throughout the area of a given layer.
The well known tubular type of pad constructed. for egg case filler use, that is when the pad ends are closed, consists of three 7 separate pieces of. paper adhesively secured together, and contains approximately 55 lineal inches of paste and 352 square inches of paper and requires several operations in its formation. a
The present invention relates to an improved type of. pad which may commonly be termed a rectangular flat or non-crowned pad and consists particularly in the formation of a pad having relatively flat upper and lower faces and side and end walls disposed at substantially right angles to the faces and to each other, this being accomplished by the use of a single sheet of paper, which in the egg case type of pad contains but 324 square inches sand by the employment of but 24 lineal inches of paste or adhesive applied to but two surfaces of the pad, the sheet'being so cut as to provide a main portionformin oneface and integral radially dispose tabs creased for folding to form the side edge or end walls and the other face.
With the above mentioned and other ob jects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described, illustrated in the ac companying drawings and pointed out in the claim hereto appended; 1t being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction. within the see c of the claim may be resorted to without eparting from the s irit or sacrificing any of the advantages 0 the invention.
, flaps and To more clearly comprehend the invention, reference is directed to the accompanying drawings, wherein Fig. 1 is a view in elevation of the preferred form of sheet we desire to employ, illustrating the notched portions forming the the gummed edge on opposing.
flaps. 1
Fig. 2 is a view in bottom plan of a formed pad illustrating themanner of folding the flaps. y
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view on line 3-3 of Fig. 2, particularly illustrating the relatively flat opposing faces for the pad.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts-1 indicates a paper sheet of any suitable texture, perferably retangular in plan. Each edge of the sheet, midway of its length, is inwardly cut as at 2 to form a notch, and' these notches it will be observed in Fig.1, form the radially disposed triangular flaps 3, one extending radially from opposite sides of the sheet. On the lines 4 of the cut portions '3 the sheets are creased, which creases define the area of that portion of the sheet which is to be used in forming one face of the pad 30 covering. Within their length the flaps are also creased transversely as at 5, the crease extending in parallel spaced relation to the creases 4, affording a portion 6 of each flap which when the flaps'are bent upwardly in 35 overlapping relation, as in Fig. 2, afford side and end walls for the pad covering. The corresponding faces at the edge of opposing flapsare provided with a-coating of adhesive I 7 which is adapted to retain all of the flaps 3 in interengaged relation when the same are folded to a position as indicated in Figs; 2 and 3.
In constructing the pad 2. filler of excelsior 8 suitably formed and pressed is provided and the same is positioned centrally on the sheet 1v with the corners of the filling ma-- terial registering with the bases of the re-:
spective cut-outs 2. The flaps adjacent the gummed edged flaps are first folded over creased lines 4 and 5. The latter flaps are pressed into engagement with the former pair of flaps and on the drying of the adhesive the same are retained in position to enclose the excelsior packing and to form therefrom' a rectangular relatively flat pad of uniform thickness from edge to center, the wrapper of which is constructed of a single sheet of material.
We claim:
A substantially rectangular non-crowned packing pad, including a body of substantially rectangular readily yielding material, and a paper cover for said body formed of a rectangular sheet of substantially larger size than said body, the central portion of the side edges of the sheet being formed with V-shaped notches, the side edges of said V-shaped notches defining the width of the 20 edge portions'of the body, the rectangular central portion of the sheet indicated by the lines joining the inner. corners of the notches defining one face of the cover, the triangular corner portions formed beyond the edge forming portions of the sheet being adapted for cooperation to form the other face of the pad, the free edges of all of the corner portions extending in overlapping relation diagonally of the pad, and a pair of opposite corner portions having the overlapped edges provided with adhesive for securing all of said corner portions in cooperating relation to secure the coveron the body for producing a pad using a minimum amount of adhesive.
In testimony whereof we have signed our names to this specification.-
