Application filed July 12, 1922. Serial No. 574,897.
This invention relates to protectors for ice cream cones and other edibles.
The object of the invention is to provide a cheap and eificient cover for ice cream cones to protect them against dust and the like, and which also operates'as a holder to prevent contact by the hand with the cone when the cone is being handled for filling and during consumption.
Another object is to provide covers of this character so constructed that they may be struck out of paper in large numbers during a single operation.
\Vith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 represents a plan view of the blank from which the protector constituting this invention is constructed.
Fig. 2 shows a side elevation of the tector ready for use, and
Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken on the line 3--3 of Fi 2.
pro-
In the embo iment illustrated, the protector 1 constituting this invention is struck .out of paper in substantially truncated triangular form as shown in Bi 1, the wider upper edge 2 being referagly curved as shown, so that when t e blank is folded to produce the cover this ed a will conform to .the shape of the edge 0 the cone to be protected. A plurality of slits 3 extend inwardly from t rovide tongues 4 which are designed to e folded inwardly along the line 5 when the cover is in position on a-cone to protect the edge of the cone.
In forming the structure 1, the blank shown in Fig. 1 has the side edges 6 and 7 thereof brou ht to other in lapping relation and cemente to et er, the truncatedsmaller end being folde u wardly as shown at 8, the flap 9 so forme closing this end of the cover which is designed to receive the smaller end of the cone to be protected.
Arranged around the up r portion of the cover 1 1s a double line 0 spaced perforae edge 12 of the blank and' tions 10 forming a tearing strip 11 between .is being filled or when the contents thereof are being eaten.
From the above description it will be'obvious that the cover 1 is designed to receive the cone to be protected being. preferably placed thereon when the cone is manufactured and the slotted upper end projects beyond the upper edge of the cone and the tongues 4 thereof are folded down inwardly into the cone thus protecting the edge of the cone and the inner portion thereof adjacent said edge as well as the exterior.
If desired, these covers 1 may be sold as 2 articles of manufacture -.and applied to the cones rior to the sale of the cone. When so use these covers 1 are folded as shown in Fig. 2 and may be arranged in superposed relation in convenient position for use. The
lines 15 in Fig. 1 represent the folding lines when the cover is laid flat before use.
These protectors render ice cream cones much more sanitary since they will be protected thereby against notonly dust and dirt floating in the atmosphere, but from germs or the like with which the cones are liable to be contaminated when. these covers are not used.'.
I claim:'-
In a device of the character described, a substantially truncated triangular blank formed of sheet material, one edge thereof being formed with slits defining a plurality of tongues adapted to be folded inwardly to provide a cover, a tearing strip defined by a plurality of spaced openings formed in parallel lines and having an extension at one end of the tearing strip, said extension being extended beyond one edge of the'blank, said blank adapted to be bent to provide a cone, and the lower end of said cone adapted to be bent upwardly to close the bottom of the device.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aflixed my signature.
