Description
Nov. 17, 1936. J M METZS 2,061,474
PAPER GL IP Filed Nov. 27, 1955 INVENTOR ATTORN EV Patented Nov. 17, 1936 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
This invention relates to paper clips and has for the primary object the provision of a device of this character which will be durable and economical to manufacture and a device which may be readily applied to paper or the like from any side or end thereof, so that during the application of said device, it may be applied in whatever position it is picked up obviating the necessity of bringing a certain portion thereof into position for its application, consequently conserving time in the use of the device and when applied will efficiently secure paper or the like against accidental detachment.
With these and other objects in view, this invention consists in certain novel features of con-- struction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a plan view illustrating a paper clip constructed in accordance with my invention.
Figure 2 is an end view illustrating the same.
Figure 3 is an edge View illustrating the device.
Figure 4 is a plan view showing the application of the paper clip to paper from one side thereof.
Figure 5 is a view similar to Figure 4 showing the application of the clip to paper from an opposite face thereof.
Figure 6 is a view similar to Figures 4 and 5 showing the application of the clip to a paper from an opposite edge of said clip to that shown in said Figures 4 and 5.
Figure 7 is a plan view showing the application of the clip to paper from one end of said clip.
Figure 8 is a view similar to Figure 7 showing the application of the clip to the paper from the other end thereof.
Figure 9 is a perspective View illustrating the clip.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral I indicates in entirety a clip constructed from a single strand of material bent to form portions A, B, C, D, E, F, and G. The portions B and D parallel one another and the portion A is arranged at right angles to said portions B and D. The portions C and E cross one another and terminate adjacent the portions 13 and D intermediate the ends of saidportions B and D. The portions F and G are integral with the portions C and E and extend angularly thereto and in the direction of each other with their ends arranged in overlapped relation. The portions F and G where overlapped are bent angularly to define pointed portions 2. The portions F and G extend at an 5 acute angle to the portions C and E and the portion F forms an integral part of the portion E and the portion G forms an integral part of the portion 0.
The clip I when bent in the manner described 10 comprises the portions A, B, C, E, D, F, and G will permit said clip to be applied to paper from either end thereof or from either side thereof. The paper when applied to the clip I from one side will pass between the pointed parts 2 of 5 the overlapped ends of the portions F and G and the portion A and when inserted in the clip from the opposite side thereof will pass between the portions 0 and E and also the overlapped ends of the portions F and G. Thus it will be seen 20 that when the paper is applied to the clip from either side that it will be firmly gripped. When applying the paper from one end of the clip I, the portion B cooperates with the portions C and G in gripping said paper and when the paper is inserted in the clip at the opposite end thereof, the portion D cooperates with the portions E and F in gripping the paper.
A clip of the character described may be cheaply manufactured and sold at a low cost and when 30 used will conserve time for the user due to the fact that the application of the clip to paper may be from either end thereof or from either side thereof.
Having described the invention, I claim: 35
A paper clip comprising a frame-like portion having parallel end portions connected by a side portion, intercrossing portions integral with said side portions and extending towards the end portions and terminating intermediate the ends 40 of said end portions, converging and overlapped portions formed on the ends of the intercrossed portions and providing pointed parts disposed adjacent the side portions and located intermediate the ends of the latter, said intercrossed portions and the overlapped and converging portions cooperating with said side and end portions in permitting the application of the frame-like portion to taper from either side or end of said framelike portion.
