To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, LOUISA L. Born, a citizen of the United States, residing at Malvern, in the county of Chester, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Childs Underbody, of which the following is a specification;

My invention consists of a childs underbody which is provided with stays adapted totransmit the downward strain or draft of garters or stocking supporters to the shoulder straps of the garment, whereby such strain or draft is imposed on the shoulders of the child which are best adapted to receive the same and so the garment may be worn with more comfort and without distorting the front and rear of the garment, provision being also made for preventing the shoulder straps of the garment from slipping fromthe shoulders of the child and for firmly sustaining the stocking-supporters.

The invention is satisfactorily illustrated in the accompanying drawing, but the important instrumentalities thereof may be varied,-and so it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the specific details shown and described, as long as they are within the spirit or scope of the claim.

Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a childs underbody in closed condition embodying my invention.

Figure 2 represents an elevation thereo in opened out condition.

Figure 3 represents a rear elevation of a portion of the body about an armhole thereof.

Figure 4 represents a side elevation of a portion of a modification of the attachment of the garter or stocking supporter to the body of the garment.

Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.

Referring to the drawings,

1 designates a childs underbody or garment which excepting the features of my invention applied thereto is of well known construction. To each side of the body at the front thereof are stitched or otherwise secured pairs of stays 2 which extend upwardly from the bottom of said front sides and converge to the fronts of the shoulder straps 3 to which they are secured.

4 designates pairs of stays which extend upwardly from opposite sides of the bottom of the back of the body and converge to therears of said shoulder straps 3 to which they are secured.

The stays 2 and 4 are on the front and rear faces of the body and extend to and from the bottom of each face. Then they meet and cross on the shoulders, thus doubly sustaining the stays on the latter and there are means provided on the lower portions of each pair of stays for the connection therewith of the stocking supporters so that there is a full downward pull of the stays from the shoulders to the bottom of the body due to saidsupporters.

The convergent portions of each pair of straps meet on the tops of the shoulder straps and are joined there as at 5 and pass together over the latter and are secured thereto, thus providing a strong structure of the stays on the tops of the shoulder straps.

The shoulder straps are unbroken continuities of the front and rear portions of the body 1, while the stays 2 and at are unbroken continuities throughout their length on the front and back of the body and over the shoulder straps and so remainfirmly in position, especially on the shoulder straps and so cannot be easily torn from the latter.

It will be noticed that the members of each pairs of stays on the front and back of the body. are spread apart and have connected with their lower portions between the pairs of stays cross pieces 6 which may be tape or other suitable material and from the same are suspended and supported in a firm and durable manner the front and rear garters or stocking supporters 7 which are looped over said pieces and secured thereto by snap fastenings 8 shown in dotted lines being of themselves nothing new.

It will now be seen that the garters are thus sustained directly on the body 1 by pluralities of stays on the front and back thereof, thus distributing the downward draft of said garters over larger surfaces of the body, and preventing distorting of the body in the vertical lines of said draft. Then as the stays of the front and back of the body converge on the shoulder straps and so meet there, they provide increased strength for the stays on said shoulder straps where the main downward draft or strain of the stays is superimposed, and so the draft or strain is transmitted directly to the shoulders of the child where it can best endure the same. Then as such draft or strain is directly downward on the centres of the shoulder straps the latter are prevented from slipping outwardly from the shoulders of the child. I

In Figure 4 I show a loop 9 which is attached to the cross piece 6 and adapted to have secured thereto the buckle of the garter 7 for evident purposes. The ends of said pieces 6 are stitched to the lower portions of the vertical stays 2 and a intermediate of the adjacent portion of the horizontal stays 12, both sets of stays being stitched to the body thus forming strong supports for the end of said pieces 6.

Buttons are attached to the body in various places for attachment of drawers or other undergarments if so desired.

In order to assist in preventing the shoulder straps from slipping outwardly from the shoulders of the child, the rear walls 9 of the armholes 10 of the body are so cut as to set on the child far back from the front walls 11 of said armholes ee Figure 3,

consequently the portions of the back of the body adjacent to the armholes are thrown 7 of the child and so hold them on the shoulders of the child as to prevent the shoulder straps from slipping outwardly from the shoulders of the child and adapting said shoulder straps to be made narrow w1th suflicient holding surfaces on the shoulders, all as shown in said Figure 3.

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

In a childs undergarment of the character stated, a body provided with shoulder straps, vertical stays on said body and shoulder straps, and horizontal stays crossing sai'd vertical stays near the lower portions of said body, said vertical stays being continuous and convergent from the lower ends of said body on the front and rear thereof to the tops of said shoulder straps and shoulder and meeting on said tops, and stocking supporting pieces each connecting a pair of said convergent vertical stays adjacent to said horizontal stays, each of said pieces being adapted to sustain a hose supporter between the members of a pair of convergent stays,
