.IBAPER CLIP.
Application filed March 25,1922. Serial No. 546,819.
To all whom it may concern: a
Be it known that l, l/Vns'rnn Know, a
citizen of the Republic of Finland, residing at Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper Clips, of which the following is a specificatlon.
7 vide a device of this character which may be constructed wholly of metal, and of any required size and strength of grip.
lVlth these and other objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claims, and in the drawings illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the inventin:
The figure represents the improved device, partly broken away to illustrate the interior construction of a portion of the device.
The improved device includes a support or base, preferably of two portions 10 and 1.1 at right angles to each other, and of wood or metal as may be preferred.
Mounted on theportion 10 of the support, is a combined holding plate 12 and housing 13, the latter tubular transversely and with circular ends, one of which is represented at 1-1;, and with guideways at the ends, one of which is represented at 1.5, next to the circular ends. Disposed within the tubular portion 13 is a. centering rod 16 bearing; at its ends a ainst the inner faces of the circular portions 14.
The improved device includes a. spring controlled grip iiinp; portion including a member formed of a. section of relatively heavy resilient wire bent substantially into ll shape to produce spaced sides 17 and a transverse connecting portion, the latter bent into coils one of which is represented at 18 and encircling the rod 16 with the portion of the transverse connecting portion between the coils bent laterally as shown at 19 and bearing on the adjacent portion 10 of the support.
The flat portion 12 of the housing bears over the lateral projection or loop 19 and thus holds the coils in position.
. Supported on the sides 17 of the gripping portion is a plate 20 secured to the portions 17 by rolling the edges of the plate around the same as shown at 21.
Formed in the plate 20 are a plurality of elongated U shaped clefts whereby holding lips 22 may be bent up from the plate to provide means for supporting a memorandum tablet 23.
At its free edge the plate 20 is provided with spaced clefts to release a portion adapted to'be bent outwardly into a finger grip 2a, to facilitate the releasing of the gripping member.
The bearing portion of the improved device is preferably formed of a single section of wire. bent to the required shape and including side loops 25 and 26, a continuous transverse portion 27, and a divided transverse portion 28 and 29.
The transverse portions 28 and 29 are upturned at their confronting ends, as indicated at 30, and the edges of theplate 23 at the sides of thelip portion 2 1- are rolled around the transverse portions 28 and 29, the upturned portions 30 preventing the lat oral displacement. of the bearing member.
The spring coil 18 operates to hold the bearing member yieldably against the portion 11 of the support, as willbe obvious.
The improved device is simple in construction, may be manufactured of any required size or capacity, of any suitable material, and may be employed wherever a yieldable clip is required to hold papers or like articles.
The preferred embodiment of the invention is disclosed in the drawings and set forth in the specification, but it will be un derstood that modifications within the scope of the claimed invention may be made in theconstruction without departing from the principle of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages. V
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new is 1. A clip device comprising a support, a resilient wire bent substantially into U shape to produce spaced sides and a connecting portion, said connecting portion turned into coils. a housing on said support and enclosing said coils and holding; them from rotation relative to the support, a plate member attached to the side portions of said U shaped member, and a bearing member swinging on the plate.

2. A clip device comprising a support, a shaped member: a bearing member formed resilient Wire bent substantially into U shape of Wire and including transverse portions, to produce spaced sides and a connecting and means for swingingly connecting said 10 portion, said connecting portion turned into plate to said transverse portions.
