Description
Patented Oct. 17, 1922.
UNIT ED STATES L. VERNA SIMONS, OLE GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN.
UNDERGARMENT.
Application filed August 28, 192;). Serial 1%. 4.06564.
To all whom dim/14] concern Be it known that I, L. VERNA SIMONS, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Undergarments; andI do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and'exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilledin the art to' whichit appertainsto make and use the same. f
This invention relates to undergarments, particularly underwear of the union suit type, and is concerned with a very simple addition and improvement therein, especially useful in connection with suits of underwear for women, whereby a suit may be made form fitting and at the same time insure that the upper edges of the suit shall not work upwardly and be exposed above the dress. It is a primary object and purpose of this invention to attain the above described ends and in a very simple and practical manner, with substantially no additional cost in-the manufacture of the garments.
For an understanding of the invention by means of which these objects and purposes are secured, as well as others not at this time specifically enumerated, reference may be had to the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing. in which.
Fig. 1 is a front elevation of' the upper part of a suit of underwear and showing the invention applied thereto, and
Fig. 2 is a front elevationillustrating the form fitting advantages of the invention in a suit of underwear having my invention incorporated therewith.
Like reference characters refer to like parts in the two figures of the drawing.
The union suit 1 may be of any preferred construction, and made from knitted fabric, and having the usual shoulder straps 2 for suspending the suit from the shoulders. In the garment shown, the upper edge is turned back upon itself making aloop 3 through which a draw string l. is passed, the ends 4 and 4t of which. are accessible at the front of the garment.
At a distance below the upper edge and in the front of the garment an opening 5 is made, the edges of which may be finished the same as a button hole and through which end of the draw string 4 may be passed, said end being turned b k a he upper edge of the garment to pass back of the front of said garment until opening is reached. ends P and 43 may then be brought together and tied as indicated at 6, the amount that the upper edge of the garment at the front is drawn down and that the opening 5 is drawn toward said upper edge being a matter of choice with the wearer. i
The construction of undergarment shown and described is particularly valuable in that the upper edges of the garment at the front are held against working upwardly and into exposed position, while at the same time the fabric of the garment is drawn upwardly and inwardly over the body and hips causing the garment to conform snugly to the person of the wearer. The amount of draw given to the garment is a matter of choice, being less for long waisted persons than for those of short waists, as is evident. But in any case, the garment may be perfectly adjusted to the body of the wearer and an abso lute assurance had against exposure of the garment at its upper part, or that the shoulder straps shall slip from the shoulders.
The specific construction shown may be varied to secure the same effect and I do not wish to be limited strictly thereto. The presence of the upper draw string affords a ready and convenient means for drawing the upper part of the garment down toward an intermediate portion thereof at the front, but in garments not thus equipped. the same result may be attained by an equivalent means. Accordingly, the invention is to comprehend all forms of structure recited in the appended claims and I consider myself entitled to all forms or modifications which come within the scope of said claims.
I claim:
1. In. an undergarments, the combination therewith of means for connecting said garment at its upper edge and at its front portion with a lower portion of the garment directly below said upper edge, said means engaging with said lower portion of the garment and drawing the front edge portion and said lower portion of the garment in a direct vertical line toward each other. substantially as described.
2. In combination with an undergarment of the union suit type of means passing around the upper edge of the garment at the front and through the garment at a point below said upper edge and at the front, said means being retractible to draw said upper The edge of the garment downwardly toward the intermediate part of the garment substantially as described.
3. In combination with anundergarment of the union suit type, and having an opening made therethrough at the front and a distance below the upper edge thereof, of a flexible member passing through said opening and around the upper edge of the garment at the front thereof, said member having ends adapted to be tied together to draw the upper edge and the garment below and to the sides of the opening toward each other substantially as described.
l. In combination with an undergarment of the union suit type and having an opening therethrough at the front and a distance below the upper edge thereof, a draw string passing around the upper edge of the garment and having loose ends at the front of the garment, said ends being turned around each other and one end passing back of the front of the garment to and through said opening therein, and the other passing in front of the front of the garment, said ends being adapted to be tied together, substan tially as and for the purposes described.
5. In combination with an undergarment of the union suit type and made from knitted fabric, of means adjustably connecting the upper edge of the garment at the front thereof directly with an intermediate portion of the garment a short distance below said upper edge of the garment, said connecting means being free from connection to the garment between said upper edge and intermediate lower portion of the garment substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
L. WERNA SIMONS.
