ATTORNEY ?atented June 26, 1934 PATENT OFFICE COMBINATION GARMENT Jacob Beckerman, New York, N. Y., assignor to Mollie Beckerman, New York, N. Y.
Substitute for application Serial No. 347,329,
March 16, 1929.
Claims.
This invention relates to articles of apparel known as slips, step-ins, chemises, and brassire combinations, or combination garments of this general kind or character; and the object of the 5 invention is to employ in conjunction with the waist encircling portion of garments of the class under consideration, a depending garter supporting portion arranged at the front side of the garment inwardly of an adjacent garment part prefl0 erably made of two thicknesses of material or otherwise constructed to provide a strong and durable body portion; a further object being to secure and suspend from the lower ends of said garter supporting portion, a plurality of garters having coupling devices adjustably arranged on the strap portions thereof, whereby the stockings may be supported in connection with and by said garment to hold the stockings in proper position, and at the same time to support the garment firmly upon the body of the wearer; a further object being to provide a combination garment of the class specified, the breast encircling portion of which is preferably designed to function as a brassiere, but not necessarily constructed of strong or reinforced material, the entire garment being preferably made of the dainty type or structure; a still further object being to provide a garment of the class specified which will combine two or more garments of conventional form in one garment part whereby single straps will be arranged over the shoulder portions, it being preferred that when a skirt part is employed such as in a slip, the lower end of said part will be of double thickness to render the same shadow proof;
and with these and other objects in View, the invention consists in a garment of the class and. for the purpose specified, which is simple in construction, efiicient in use, and which is constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which:-
Fig. 1 is a front, perspective view of a garment made according to my invention with part of the structure folded upon itself.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal, sectional view through the garment shown in Fig. 1, and on the line 2--2 of said figure.
Fig. 3 is a cross section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a sectional, detail view of one of the 55 garter fastening devices which I employ.
This application June 26, 1933, Serial No. 677,694
Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 1 showing a modified form of garment; and,
Fig. 6 is a view similar to Fig. 1 showing a combination garment involving structural features of both of the garments shown in Figs. 1 and 5.
In Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive, I have shown one form of garment, combining a brassiere and what is known as a slip. In this construction, I have shown at 10 a brassiere garment part or that part of the garment encircling the breast of the wearer.
The upper edge of this brassiere part has two shoulder straps 11 which extend from the front to the back portion of the part 10 and are adapted to pass over the shoulders of the wearer, the part 10 being detachably coupled together at one side as indicated at 12 by the provision of any suitable fastening device extending longitudinally of said part, the devices being preferably such as to facilitate the firm engagement of the part 10 about the body of the wearer. However, this is not absolutely necessary as the garment part or brassiere may be of a loosely fitting type.
The brassire part 10 extends to and terminates at a waist band portion 13 which encircles the waist of the wearer, and attached to the part 10 and extending therebelow is a garter supporting part 14 preferably made of the same material but of double thickness so as to give the required strength. This garter supporting part extends from the sides of the garment as indicated at 15 around the front thereof and terminates at its lower end in downwardly directed V-shaped portions 16 arranged in pairs at opposite sides of the garment, and from which are suspended stocking attaching garters 1'7 involving elastic portions 170. and strap portions 17!) on the latter of which are adjustably supported stocking engaging devices 18, one of which is shown in detail in Fig. 4 of the drawing.
The devices 18 consist in the construction shown of a plate 19 having three vertically spaced and transverse apertures through which the strap 17b is threaded to form at the upper end of the plate an outwardly projecting loop 20 which also passes through spaced apertures in a lock plate 21 to support the plate 21 in connection with the plate 19, the strap 17!) being also looped through the other pair of apertures as seen at 20a so as to lock the device 18 or the separate parts 19 and 21 thereof against displacement when adjusted into predetermined position on the strap 17b. The plate 19 has an outwardly projecting headed pin 22 which cooperates with a key-hole aperture 23 in the plate 21 in securing the upper edge of a stocking within and between the pin 22 and the walls of the aperture 23. The end of the strap 17b is provided with a finishing plate 24 which forms a neat and finished appearance to the strap end, and also prevents accidental displacement of the device 18, as will be apparent.
It will be noted on a consideration of Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing, that I preferably employ reinforcing straps 25 arranged on the inner surface of the part 10 at the front of the garment to aid in supporting the garter supporting part 14 and take up the stress or strain to which the parts are subjected in supporting the stockings firmly in position, and these reinforcing straps are preferably employed when the part 10 is of a delicate nature. It will be understood, however, that their use is not absolutely essential.
The structure just described may constitute a complete garment involving my invention; and as another garment, I include in conjunction with the garter supporting part 14 front and rear skirt portions 26 and 27 which are secured to the waist band 13 or to the lower end of the part 10, the portion 26 being arranged outwardly of the garter supporting part 14 and the portions 26 and 27 being independent or separated at the sides of the garment, and may be secured together by oppositely disposed ribbons, tie cords or other fastening means 28 to retain the skirt of the garment upon the body of the wearer in proper position, the straps or securing means being arranged at the upper end portions of said parts or at points below or adjacent the waist band 13, leaving the lower ends free to give access for leg movement. It is also preferred that the lower ends of the skirt portions 26 and 27 be made of two ply thickness as seen at 26a and 27a, note Fig. 2, to render the same shadow proof, but this is not necessary in all kinds or classes of materials from which the garment may be constructed.
The garment as completely described above, will constitute what is known as a slip, in which the garter supporting part 14 is incorporated. It will be noted that this slip may be open entirely at one side of the garment, and when the same is in use, one of the garters 17 at each side of the garment will be attached to the stocking at the front portion of the leg, whereas the other of said garters will be attached to the stocking toward the back of the leg so as to firmly retain the garter supporting part 14 about the abdomen of the wearer. In this operation, it will also be understood that the brassiere or garment part 10 may also be drawn downwardly and firmly supported upon the body of the wearer.
In Fig. 5 of the drawing, I have shown a modification of the structure shown in Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive, wherein the part a is identical to the part 10 and includes the strap members 11a, the side opening 12a, the waist band portion 13a, the garter supporting part 14a including the garters 1'7 and their several parts, but substituted for the skirt portions 26 and 27 is a garment part 29 such as commonly employed in what are known as stepins and chemises, and involving two leg openings 30 disposed at opposite sides of said part, the garter supporting part 14a being arranged inwardly of the front portion of the part 29 and the garters 17 being adapted to pass through the leg openings. The part 29 may be stitched or otherwise secured together at both sides, or one side may be open in alinement with the openings 12a as will be apparent.
In Fig. 6 of the drawing, I have shown another modification which incorporates both of the structures shown in Figs. 1 and 5. In this figure, the part 10?) is equivalent to the parts 10--10a and the references 11b, 12b, 13b and 14b, 29a, 30a, 26a and 27a in Fig. 6 will represent like parts, bearing the same numerals in Figures 1, 2 and 5 of the drawing, including the several details of construction of said parts. In other words, the garment shown in Fig. 6 includes a combination of a brassiere, step-in and slip, in connection with which the part 142) is incorporated for supporting the garters or other stocking engaging means. The parts 101), 26a27a and 29a may be open throughout the entire length of one side of the garment, or the part 29a may be seamed at both sides as in Fig. 5 of the drawing.
It will be understood that other forms and variations of garments may be produced, incorporating the fundamental principles of my invention, and especially the provision of the breast encircling body part or brassire and the garter supporting part, and various other changes in and modifications of the construction herein shown and described may be made within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
This application constitutes a substantial copy of a prior abandoned application filed by me March 16, 1929, which bore Serial Number 347,329, and allowed February 11, 1931.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
