UNION SUIT Application filed March'G, 1929. Serial No. 344,780.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in undergarments for masculine wear and more particularly to a union suit, the primary object of the invention be- 5 ing to provide a "garment of the character mentioned which is designed to produce and provide the utmost comfort and convenience in the wear thereof at all times.

.A further object of the invention resides 1 in constructing a union suit so that the posterior or rear section thereof. will be free from buttons and other securing means but which is also designed to automatically position itself properly on the body of the wearer 15 and permit movements of the body in all directions without causing undue strains on any portion of thegarment.

Still another object of the invention resides in forming the rear half of the waistband,

20 forming the upper edge of the posterior section, with a hem or casing in which is secured an elastic band engaged with the sides of the garment, so that the posterior section after having been drawn down against the tension 5' of the elastic band will be automatically returned to its normal and proper position.

A further object resides in providing a flap depending from the back portion of the garment which is secured to the sides or leg portions adapted to be covered by the posterior section of the garment when said latter section is returned to its normal'position and which will prevent the rear or back section of the garment from being drawn upwardly or buckled upon the return of the posterior section to its normal position.

With these and numerous other objects in view, my invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter referred to and. more particularly pointed out in the specification and claim.

Union suits for masculine wear appear to be the most popular at the present time and as the greater proportion of such garments now being manufactured have some form of fastening means such as buttons and the like, in the rear or side,'which fastening means is usually damaged in laundrying, considerable inconvenience and discomfort is had in the wearing and use thereof. My invention contemplates the provision'of a garment of the type mentioned which eliminates the use of such fastening means in the rear or sides and which is provided with an elastic to return the posterior section automatically to its normal position around the waist of the wearer and whichwill at the same time permit of the various movements of the body without undue strain on any portion of the garment.

The rear or posterior section 5 has considerable fullness in the seat thereof, as is usually provided in'gar- As'stated above, one of the principal features of my invention is to provide a garment eliminating the use of buttons or fastening devices from the posterior section and in carrying out this object, the upper edge of the posterior section is provided'with a hem or casing 7 in which is introduced an elastic band 8' of less length than the casing, the hem or casing being gathered over said band. The ends of this elastic band 8 are stitched asshown at 9 to the side -seams or stitching between the frontal, and posterior sections and in addition to this stitching, the band 8 is also stitched to the hem or casing 7 as shown at 10 inward of said stitching 9. Thus, should it occur through use that the elastic band is disengaged from one member it will be secured to another and will not become entirely disengaged and ineffective.

although normally of less length than one half of the waist band of the garment, and in this manner the posterior or rear section is normally held in proper position about the body of the wearer. Thisposteriorsection may be drawn down under the knees of the wearer when necessary, but under the action of the elastic .band, will automatically return to its proper and normal position and fit sn gly around the waist of the wearer, without the necessity of buttons or other fastenings means.

This flap is permanently stitched along its side edges to the side seams as shown at 12 so that in the return of the posterior section to its normal position, under action of the elastic band 8, the lower end of the posterior section will not be carried along with it and there will be no buckling up of the sections of the garment.

The lower edge of this flap 11 is concave as shown at 13 for obvious purposes.

From the foregoing description of the con- 'struction of my improved garment, the manner of forming the same and its useon the body will be readily understood, and it will be seengthat I have provide a simple, inexpensive and efficient means for carrying out the objects of the invention. ;I t will be further seen that with my improvedgarment the use of an elastic webbing. in the back section of the garment to permit ease in bending taken care of by theelastic band in the upper edge of the posterior section asheretofore described.

Various changes in form, proportion and inthe minor details of construction maybe resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the principles of the invention.
