BAG HANDLE AND HANDLE IEASTENIEIEL- THEREFOR.
and useful Improvementsin Bag Handles and Handle Fasteners Therefor; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full clear, and exact description of-the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the, same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to characters of reference marked thereon, which form ;a part of this specification.
This invention has reference to improve tener, similar'to that represented in said F gure 4, but showingthe parts in their operated positions, for the attachment of an merits in handles for travelling bags, suitcases, and the like; and, the present invention relates, more particularly, to a novel form and construction of handlelesteners for attaching the handle to a bagframe.
The principal-object of the present invention is to provide a means for detachably securing the ends of a bag-handle to the frame of a bag, suitcase, or the like; and,
the invention has for its further object to provide a novel and simply constructedhandle-fastener for bag-frames, whereby should the handle become worn, torn or soiled. it can readily be detached, without having to remove the handle-fasteners from the bag-frame section, and'rcadily replaced by another handle. r
Other objects of the present invention not at this time moreparticularly. enumerated will be clearly understood from the following detailed description. of the present invention.
With the various objects of the present invention in view, the said invention consists, primarily, in the novel handle-fastener hereinafter more fully set forth; and, they said invention consists. furthermore, in the novel arrangements and combinations of the various devices and parts, as well as in the details of the construction of the said parts, all of which will be more fully set forth in the following specification and then;
finally embodied in the clauses of the claims which are appended to and which form'an essential part of the said-specification.
The invention, is clearly illustrated, in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is an elevation of a fragmentary Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Aug; Application filed May 18, 1921. "Serial in 470,512.
portion of a bag-frame section, and a pair of handle-fasteners secured upon saidframesection, with a bag-handle detachably secured at its ends to said handle-fasteners,
all arranged to show one embodiment of the principles of the present invention.
Figure 2 is a top view and Figure 3 a bottom view of one of the handle-fasteners; Figure 4 is a longitudinal vertical section of the same, said section being taken on line -l%l insaidfl igure 2, looking in the direc illOllOf thearrow 0c 1n said Figure w 2; and Figure 0 s a similar view of the sa d fastener, said SQCillOlrlJGlng taken on line 5-5 in said. Figure 2.
Figure 6 is sectional View of the fasend ot' a bag-handle to the fastener, or for its removal therefrom; and Figure ,7 is a transverse vertical section ofthe fastener, said sectionbeing taken on line 7-7 in said Figure '2. looking in the direction of the arrow. y in said figure.
lia1i rlle}fastener; and Figure ll is a longitu dinal vertical section of the same.
Figure 12 isa similar'section of the said fastener. showin the parts thereof in their operated positions, for the attachment to or removal frornv-said fastener of an end of a bag-handle.
Similar characters of reference are employed in all of the said above described views to indi ate corresponding parts. Beferring now more particularly to several figures of the drawings, the reference-character 1 indicates one of the usual bag-handles with the ends of which are suitably conneced the usual handle-loops 2-. The reference-character 3 indicates the novel form o'f handle-fastenen thejsame comprisinga suitablyformed box or shell consisting ofa top l, a'p'air of longitudinally extending sides 5,and laterally ext-ending ends 6, the latter being provided with downwardly projectinglugs or ears 7, adapted to be inserted through suitably disposed slits in the framesectic Spend bent against the inner face of said frame-section, substantiallyas indicated in Figure l ofnthe drawings.
As shown, theis'aid top i 'ji's ipre'fe'rably formed. with a laterallyextending andoiitwardly convexed portion,=as 9,-yformedwith suitably disposed slits 10, for the purposes to be presently more fully described. t-Extending laterally across the chamber formed by the top, ends, and sides" ofthesaidbo'X or shell, and directly beneath the said slits, is a pin 11, which li'asits endsin'sei te'dand suitably secured in perforations I2 with which the said sides ,5 are v prQVide'd, 811bstantially as shown inFiguie 7 6i thedrawings Pix/ otall'y mounted upon said pin 11 is a latch, consisting ofva suitably curved or bent body-plate 13, the free endl i' (if which provides a suitable 'fingerpiem C ii ving from the opposite "marginal edges "of said body-plate 13,as at 15,la ie ,a -pair'fof-i'ibS or projections 16,the lower end p'o'rtidns 17fof which extend throughthe respective slits '10,
' said ends 17 being inade in the form of ivot-lugs or ears and being: pet a i at 18, for pivotally mountingfsaid latchiipon I the said pin 11,substantially p as shown n the severalfigures of'the drawings. Suitably secured within the said box or shell,
by means of arivet19,"or otherwisefis'a plate or member, asIZO, a spacing washer 121 being preferably mounted upon the shank of saidrivet, between; the uppersurface of ect ng saidplate or member 2 0 andithe'innersub face'of the top 4, as shown. At its portion nearest the said lateh, the said plate or member 20 has an upwardly extending element or post, as 21, eirtending ;-into and through I a laterally extending lslit .22 in the 4 of the box or shell, and being off 'the same width, or approximately so, as the width of the body-plate 13 of the latch. At its upper portion,--.outside of t hesaid boxer shell, the said element or post 21 iskniade with a curved and slightly dowirwaifdlyiprohandle-loop 'receiving' or" earner-e16- ment 23', with the'end edgefportienoffwhich the portions 15 of the ribs 16 areladapted to be brought into closing engagement, as shown in Figures 1, 2,4 ands oftheiidrawinsets. This closing engagement of these parts is automatically produced b'y;a-lKcoiled spri ng 24 meu-ntedupon the previously inentionedlpin '11, one end 25 of'lsaid spring being in engagement withthejjliitelorlfliember 20, and the other end port ipnfifi oflisaid and transversely from one of the earsor being in e gagement with aflprojection or finger, as .27, extending forwar'dly pivot-lugs of the hereinabolvementioned latch, and as clearly represented inFigiires 3, 4an'd5 of the drawings.
. p In practice, two of-su'ch shellsgoriboites are secured upon one ofj sitions,'and in the mann ef 1 of the drawings, the latches of the respective vfasteners being suitably swung upon their ,"pi'vot-ears or lugs 17 outwardly, against the actions of the springs 2 see Figure-6, to permit of the placing of the respective handle-loops 2 beneath the respective loop-receiving or carrier-elements23 of the two handle-fasteners, as will beevident. As "soon as the pressure is released from the opened latches, the springs 24: cause them to be automatically brought into closed enga gement with the elements 23, thereby properly andsecurely attaching the handle to "thebag frame, as will be clearly understOod,
'Intheinodifi'ed construction of handle gifastener shown inFigures 8 to'12 inclusive, the general arrangement'and construction of 'theseveral parts is thesame as that described "connection with s'aid'Figures'1to7 inielusivefexcept inlieu' of the coiled spring "24,I5secure by means of the rivet 19, against the lower-face of the plate or member 20,-a "flat spring, as 28, the forward end-portionflfi) of said spring being adapted to engage either of 'a pair of angularly disposed edge-portions or 31 of the respective pivot-ears or lugs of the latch, whereby the several. parts of the handle-fastener are adapted to be broug ght into their relatively closed'po'si-' trons, as indicated in Figures 10 and 11, or nto the r opened positions, as illustrated in FigureIQ, the spring holding the latch in 'handle fastener is therefore deemed unnec "'ess ar'y. 7
"Of course I am aware that some changes maybe made in the general arrangements "andcom'binations'of the several devices and parts, as well as in the details of the con- 'struc'tion of the said parts, without 'departingdromjthe scope of thepresent invention asset forth in the foregoing specification, "andas defined in the clauses of the claims which are appended thereto. Hence, I do iiotli-mit'my. presentxinvention to the exact "arrangements and combinations of the sevan devices and parts as described in the fsfaid specification, nor do I confine myself to thef'exact details of the construction of the fsaidipart as illustrated in the accompany Y In combination with a bag-framehandle,provided at its ends with handlef'loo'ps, handle fasteners' adapted to be secured uponabag iram each handle fastener-comprisinga chambered boX,'a loop-receiving carrier-member non-separably secured within, eah box and having a carrier-post ex- -teiiding -"a;bove said 7 box, said posts being" formed with curved receiving members with which the ends of the handle are detachably connected, and latches connected with said fasteners adapted to be brought into engagement with said receiving-members.
